Like the Sebastian who came to Blairwood.

My back stiffens instinctively at the stern note in his voice, but I try to brush it off and focus on what matters—getting the hell out of here.

I give Henry the command toenterand follow after him, not wasting any time. Sebastian does the same, pulling the door closed behind him and finally dulling the noises from the outside if only a little.

“Well, it’s about damn time,” an unfamiliar voice says, making me jump in surprise. “I was starting to worry that I overestimated your time of arrival.”

Sebastian, on the other hand, doesn’t seem the least bit surprised. His body relaxes slightly, his arm falling around my shoulders on the backseat of the car. “You? Overestimated something? Did you lose your touch while I was gone?”

“Is that any way to talk to the person who’s trying to make your life as easy as possible?” the woman asks, a note of teasing hiding in her otherwise serious tone.

“I wouldn’t dare,” Sebastian says. “It’s good to see you, Brianna. Thanks for the save.”

“Remember that the next time you disappear without a word and leave your mess for me to deal with, mister.”

“Ouch, no need to kick me. Have you been hanging out with Sera when I was gone?”

“My company islovely,” Seraphina chimes in across from me. “Thank you very much. It’s you whose company leaves a lot to be desired.”

“If by lovely you mean annoying, then sure.”

“I’ll show you—”

“Stop it, kids!” Brianna yells, shushing them both. “Seriously, it was so nice when you two were on opposite sides of the country. And Bash, it was you who left me to twiddle my thumbs, so anything I caught in your absence is your own damn fault.”

“Of course, it has to be my fault,” Sebastian mutters.

“Serves you right,” Brianna huffs. “And you must be the infamous Penelope Adams.”

As if on cue, I can feel her attention shift to me, her sharp eyes taking me in.

I let out a nervous chuckle, “I feel like I’m at a disadvantage here.”

“Penelope, this is my personal assistant, Brianna. The woman who makes my life miserable. Brianna, this is Penelope, my girlfriend.”

My girlfriend.

This is the first time he’s called me that out loud, and hearing him say those words makes my heart skip a beat and the warmth spread inside my belly.

No matter what happened, this was real. He was mine, and I was his, and we’d figure the rest out.

I can feel Sebastian’s body shift closer to mine, the tip of his finger running against the side of my neck and sending a shiver down my spine.

“So I’ve heard. Are you sure you want to get yourself into this?”

“Why wouldn—” Sebastian starts, but Brianna stops him. “I wasn’t askingyou, Bash. I know it’s hard to believe, but the world doesn’t revolve around you, you know?”

Her no-nonsense tone makes me laugh out loud. “Where did you find her?”

“Oh, I foundhim. Not the other way around. So, you sure you want to get in all this mess, Penelope?”

“No,” I softly admit, my attention shifting to Sebastian. “But I know I want him, so I guess it’s a package deal.”

“That’s true,” Brianna agrees. “Okay, then. Now that I have you let’s go over your schedule.”

Sebastian lets out a groan, “Do we have to do this now?”

“Don’t you pull that tone with me, Sebastian Black. If I say we’re going over the schedule, we’re going over the schedule.”
