His mother?!

My mouth falls open at the revelation.

This can’t be happening.

I can feel the color rising in my cheeks in embarrassment as Sebastian joins me, his hand slipping around my middle and pulling me to him. “To what do I owe this visit?”

He asks, his voice cold and almost… detached?

“Can’t a mother visit her son? A son that’s beenavoidingher for the past six months?”

“As if,” he scoffs. “We both know that if you really wanted to find me, you’d be able to do it without an issue. The only reason you didn’t do it was because it didn’t benefit you.”

“You needed time to…” There is a short pause as she weighs her words carefully. “Process what had happened.”

“And there wasn’t anything important for me to do. Because if there was, you’d make sure I’d be here, just like you made sure I’m here now.”

“I hardly call losing millions of dollars on canceled concerts not important, but…”

“But the image is always more important, and you didn’t want to risk people asking about Christian’s sudden disappearance.”

“It wasn’t like…”

“You can save it,” Sebastian interrupts her. “Was there anything you needed?”

“I came to see you. But… I also wanted us to go out for brunch, catch up, and make a game plan.”

Sebastian’s fingers dig into my side, but I don’t make a sound. Instead, I place my hand on his back, rubbing softly at the tense muscles.

“There is no game plan to be made. We’re doing the awards, and then we’re going back to Blairwood. End of story.”

“Sebastian, let’s just go to brunch and talk.”

“No can do. We have other plans.”

“What plans?” she asks, clearly suspicious.

“I’m taking Penelope out. I promised her I’d take her shopping.”

“Shopping…” She wants to say more, but she bites her tongue. “Fine. Dinner, then. We have to discuss the upcoming award show anyway.”

I expect Sebastian to protest again, but he surprises me. “Fine. Dinner.”

That probing gaze shifts back to me. “I suppose I should book a table for three to include your… friend?”

I open my mouth to interject, but Sebastian’s faster.

“Girlfriend,” he corrects. “And yes.”

His mother lets out a sigh. “Fine. I guess I’ll see you later.”

Her high heels clink against the floor as she leaves the room. The moment I hear the door close behind her, my body relaxes.

“You good?” Sebastian turns toward me, his hands cupping my cheeks.

“Yeah, she just surprised me, that’s all. You came pretty fast.”

“I turned over and realized you weren’t in bed, so I decided to go look for you.”
