“Are you sure you want him doing his business in your garden?”

I press my lips against the top of her head. “Positive.”

Penelope nods. “I’ll be back in a few.”

I watch her and Henry walk out of the room, her hips swaying softly with the motion. I’m so absorbed with Penelope I don’t see Brianna until she smacks me over the head. “You’re so smitten. It’s disgusting. I should film you two and post it on your social media. Your fans would have a field day.”

I turn around and glare at her. “You’re not posting shit.”

Brianna’s eyes widen at my sharp tone, but she regains her composure quickly. “It was just a joke, chill. You know I wouldn’t do something like this behind your back.”

I run my hand over my face. “I know, sorry, it’s just… Penelope has been getting some nasty messages and comments on her social media since this whole thing blew up.” Just thinking about them made the rage inside of me boil. “I don’t want to put her through it. She’s the last person who deserves it.”

“Fuck, people are just awful sometimes. What did she do to them?”

“Was seen with me,” I say evenly.

“Maybe that’s the issue. Maybeyoushould be the one to post it.” I open my mouth to cut her off, but she glares at me. “Just listen to me, will you? Ifyoupost on your social media, you’re controlling the narrative. And while yes, there still might be some nasty comments, if you make it clear that you guys are official, and that she’s somebody you’re serious about. I’m sure most of your fans will rally behind you two. Just think about it. Your name can protect her.”

Can it really? Because so far, the only thing it brought her was heartache.

“We’ll see. I’ll make Penelope some coffee,” I say to nobody in particular, needing to change the subject. I’ve just refilled the grounds and turned on the machine when Brianna’s question stops me in my tracks.

“Can you explain to me why I got a security tape from a restaurant in my email?”

Shit, that was fast.

I slowly turn around, trying to come up with some kind of plausible explanation, but my mind is blank.

Seraphina’s eyes narrow at me suspiciously. “Security tape? Why would you need a security tape?”

“I…”

Think, Black. Just think.

“What the hell is going on, Sebastian?”

I bite my tongue, not wanting to admit the truth out loud. Brianna looks between the two of us.

“Fine,” Brianna mutters. “We’ll just have a look.”

Before I can stop her, Brianna presses play, and the video uploads on her phone. There is no sound as people pass by, and a few cars move through the driveway. Then Penelope and I appear on the screen. Although the image is slightly blurry, there is no mistaking Penelope’s blond hair.

“It’s not—”

I don’t get to finish because before too long, the car appears on the camera footage and goes straight for us. The image on the video mixes with the memories of last night, almost in slow motion. I watch the car speed up with no hesitation, no slowing down. I grab Penelope, trying to get us out of the way, and at the very last second, the driver swirls to the side and drives away just as my Porsche comes to a stop in front of the restaurant.

Brianna gasps loudly, and Seraphina starts muttering curses.

“This is nothing?” Sera asks, pointing at the phone. “You almost got run over! When was it? Last night?”

“Yes, it was last night.” I run my hand through my hair, messing up the already unruly locks even more. “And that’s why I asked them to send me the tape. I wanted to ensure that what happened last night wasn’t an accident.”

“It certainly doesn’t look like an accident,” Brianna says, turning the screen toward us. She rewound the video, stopping it just before the car turned around.”

You can see a shadow of the body sitting behind the wheel. The car, a truck actually, is black or some other dark color, and any trace of doubt that this might have been an accident evaporated when I noticed the car didn’t have license plates.

Whoever it was, they knew exactly what they were doing.
