I still haven’t opened my social media ever since the news about Sebastian and me broke and the first hateful comments and messages started to arrive. How did all those people find me, I’ll never understand, but I wasn’t ready to deal with any of it just yet.

“No, definitely not paparazzi. It’s actually my sister. But the analogy is pretty accurate. She’s relentless when she sets her mind on something, and I haven’t really told her I was here.”

Silence stretches between us as my words hang in the air.

And the award for the worst sister in the world goes to… you’ve guessed it right, me.

In my defense, I knew she wouldn’t like this one bit, and I didn’t want to get in a fight with her over it. Besides, it’s not like I planned the whole thing. It kind of sort of happened at the very last second.

“Oh, I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes when she gets a hold of you,” Brianna chuckles, making my shoulders relax.

“No, I wouldn’t either, but it’s a better alternative than fighting with her as I was shoving things into my suitcase while I waited for my best friend to pick me up for the airport. Anyway, do I have time for a shower?”

“Make it a quick one.”

Grabbing my clothes, I go to the bathroom and quickly wash up and dress before doing my makeup. All the while, Brianna chats with me from the room, telling me little details about Sebastian and what he used to be like.

“He’ll probably kill me for telling you all of this.”

“It’ll be our little secret.”

“He’s really changed.”

Closing my lip gloss, I turn toward her and lean against the counter. “Has he?”

I could see the change in him, but it was probably different to Brianna, who’s known him for years. Who’s worked with him closely all this time.

Brianna hums, “He did. I’m not sure if it’s due to everything that had happened with Christian, because that shit messed with his head a lot, or the fact that he met you. Probably a little bit of both.”

A knot forms in my throat, and I can’t help but hurt for the boy who lost his friend in such a way.

“What was he like? Christian?”

Brianna lets out a long sigh. “I shouldn’t be talking shit about the dead, but Christian was a train wreck just waiting to happen.”

“Why do you think so?” I ask carefully, although, thinking back, Sebastian’s mom said something similar during our dinner.

“He and Sebastian were friends since they were kids before Sebastian got famous, and whatever one did, the other had to do too.”

I nod, remembering Sebastian told me the very same thing.

“It wasn’t healthy. It grew to the point of an obsession, but Bash loved Christian. He was like his adopted brother, and you couldn’t say anything wrong against him. But I honestly couldn’t not notice how obsessive Christian’s behavior was. He was an average musician at best, but because Bash was one, he had to do the same. Christian was extremely jealous and possessive of Bash and his success.”

A prickle of unease goes down my spine at her words. I couldn’t imagine Sebastian hanging out with a person like that. Then again, the Sebastian that I know is different from the person he used to be before.

“It was weird, really. I don’t know, maybe I just imagined it, but that guy gave me the creeps.” Brianna lets out a sigh, “But he’s gone, and Sebastian finally seems happy. I’m glad to see it. He deserves it.”

“Yeah, he does,” I whisper, my thoughts still on Brianna’s words. It was hard to imagine Sebastian with somebody like that.

“Anyway, don’t tell him I told you that. He doesn’t take kindly to people talking badly about Christian or his family. Even after everything they’ve done.”

“Everything they’ve done?” I repeat, unsure where she’s going with this.

“Yes, when Christian died—” A phone starts ringing loudly, stopping her from finishing. “I have to take this.”

I clasp my fingers together as Brianna answers her phone. She walks away, her hushed tone growing distant.

I try to listen in, but her words are a blur. A few minutes pass as she talks to whoever’s on the phone.
