“Unless nothing. We both know that once Taylor gets something in her head, there is no stopping her.”

That was one of the things I admired about Taylor. She was a completely no-bullshit kind of person. What you see is what you get, which I appreciate.

“Maybe, but she’ll definitely not be as hard on me if you’re there as she would if we’re alone.”

His hand grabs mine, and I can feel the warmth of his skin as he squeezes my hand between both of his palms.

“Come with me?”

“I…” I nibble at my lower lip, not sure what to say. I liked hanging out with Enrique and Taylor, but this seemed to have trouble written all over it.

The list I wrote flashes in my mind, silently mocking me.

Then again, this was Moore’s. The local student hangout was the perfect place if I wanted to start ticking off the items on my list.

And I could start small.

Have a beer with friends.

Beer counts as alcohol. Plus, I guess I should try it before I attempt playing beer pong.

“Pretty please, Penny? Come with and save me?”

I roll my eyes at him. “You don’t need saving from Taylor.”

“You wouldn’t be saying that if you talked to her. She’s pretty pissed. Please?”

I let out a sigh. “Fine. I’ll join you and Taylor.”

The words barely leave my mouth when Enrique throws his arms around me and pulls me in a hug. “Thanks, Penny. You’re a lifesaver!”

“I don’t know about that,” I softly laugh as he pulls back. “I didn’t realize Taylor was that scary. Maybe I should be the weary one.”

“That’s Taylor, but I’m also just happy to hang out with you. I haven’t seen you since the end of last semester. Where are you headed anyway?”

“I have myMusical Theoryclassin a little bit. What about you?”

“Damn, I have that on a different day. I have my guitar lesson now. I should be done at seven. Meet you in front of the building so we can walk together?”

“Can’t. I’ll be across campus because I have my lit class later.”

Enrique groans, “I can’t believe none of our classes align today. Okay, then, I’ll meet you in front of Moore’s after the last class. How about that?”

I flash him a smile. “Sounds perfect.”

Just then, my watch buzzes on my wrist.

“Shit.Ishould be the one having alerts too.”

I silence the alarm and give Henry the command to proceed. “They do come in handy occasionally.”

I started using alarms after I was late a few times my freshman year. It was so easy to get pulled into a conversation with somebody, or as I was waiting in line, so I measured how long it took me to get somewhere. Instead of constantly checking my phone for the time, I set the alarms to alert me when I need to get going if I don’t want to be late.

“Maybe if I had them, I wouldn’t be constantly late. Anyway, I’ll see you later.”

With another quick hug and a goodbye, we leave in opposite directions. The hallway is still relatively noisy as people wait for classes to begin. Henry leads me between the people and into our next classroom.

“Find an open seat, Henry.”
