Shit.

I try to roll to the side, but my muscles give out, and I fall on Penelope instead.

“Sebastian!”

Penelope’s terrified voice is the last thing I hear, but not even she can make me cling to reality when the darkness swallows me whole.

CHAPTERFORTY-FIVE

PENELOPE

“Penelope!”

I look up at the sound of my name, trying to figure out who’s calling me and where the sound is coming from, but my head is a mess. The emergency room is buzzing with activity: machines are beeping, people are yelling and crying, and I can even hear screams coming from somewhere in the distance.

Just like Sebastian was screaming when I found his wound.

I shut my eyes, trying to tune out the sound still ringing in my head. Trying to forget the feel of his warm blood trickling between my fingers.

He has to be fine.

He has to.

“Shit, Penelope.” A hand falls on my shoulder, snapping me out of my thoughts.

Left. The sound is coming from my left.

“Oh my God, what happened?”

“Ma’am, I’ll have to as—” the doctor starts, just as the voice finally registers in my mind.

“Brianna?” I call out, my voice coming out groggy.

“Yeah, sorry. Are you okay? How badly are you hurt?”

“I’m fine. The bullet just scraped me, but Sebastian…” My throat bobs as I remember the feel of the warm blood seeping through the wound in his shoulder. My fingers were still sticky from trying to stop the bleeding. Sebastian’s limp body cradled in my arms. “They took him, and when I tried to a-ask…” I shake my head. “Can you find out where he is?”

“On it. I’m so sorry. I should have never left…”

“It’s fine. Please just find out if he’s okay.”

It feels like it’s been forever since we were brought here, and no matter who I asked, they didn’t want to tell me anything claiming I wasn’t his next of kin.

Not knowing was killing me.

He had to be okay.

He simplyhadto.

Brianna gives my shoulder a squeeze. “I’ll find out what’s going on. You sit still.”

I don’t bother pointing out that even if I wanted to, I couldn’t go anywhere. The doctor was still patching me up. I was coming off the adrenaline high, and the local anesthesia the guy gave me before he started sewing the wound didn’t help with it either. On top of that, I had no idea where my cane was. I probably dropped it when Bobby pushed me out onto the stage.

I’m not sure how much time passes as the doctor works. But just as he’s finishing with the cut on my neck, Brianna appears again.

“He’s in the OR. The bullet got stuck in his arm, and they had to get it out, but so far, he’s doing well.”

I let out a long breath, my shoulders sagging in relief as tears gather in my eyes.
