He’s okay.

He’s going to be okay.

A hand touches my shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze. “He’s going to be fine,” Brianna repeats. “He’s too stubborn not to survive.”

“I know,” I whisper, although it was hard to believe it when the events of the night were still so vivid in my mind.

“Okay, you’re all done.” Something clatters next to me, followed by the creaking of the chair as he gets up. “You’ll need to check with your physician about the re-dressing of the wounds and later on getting your stitches out, but you should be good to go.”

“She’s staying here tonight. I already discussed it with the nurses. C’mon, Penny, let’s get you to your room.”

My room?

I can hear her footsteps walk away.

“Ummm, Brianna?”

“Yes?”

“I…” My tongue darts out, sliding over my lower lip. God, I hated even thinking about this. I hated that I had to depend on somebody for help like this. “I’ll need your help. I lost my cane and…”

“Shit, I’m so sorry, Penny. Of course.” A hand gently touches my elbow as Brianna helps me down from the bed.

The sudden change makes me sway on my feet. My fingers wrap around her forearm instinctively so I can steady myself until the wave of dizziness passes.

“Are you okay? Do you need to lie down? Or maybe some wat—”

“Just lightheaded.” I force myself to take a deep breath before making a tentative step. “I’m good now.”

I lean on Brianna as she leads me through the hospital.

“What’s with the room?” I ask her, trying to focus on the conversation and not on the throbbing pain in my body. It feels like my every muscle aches, my head is pounding, and I can feel the burn in my shoulder and neck.

“I got you and Bash a private room. They will bring him up once he’s out of surgery.”

“Oh, you didn’t have to—”

“Yes, I did,” Brianna interrupts me. “I promised him I’d look out for you, and instead, I left you all alone. If I stayed—”

“If you stayed, everything would’ve played out the same, but you’d have ended up hurt.”

“Better me than him.”

“He wouldn’t think that for a moment, and you know it.”

For all his complaining, I could see that Sebastian genuinely loved and respected Brianna and all she did for him. The last thing he’d have wanted is to see her hurt.

“Doesn’t make me feel any less shitty.” Brianna lets out a sigh. “Here we are.”

There is a flicker of the switch before the door closes, and finally, there is some blessed silence.

“The sink is to your right, and next to it is the toilet. On the other side, you have a shower, and the towels are hanging next to it. Do you need my help?”

I shake my head and regret the movement almost instantly. “That’s perfect. Thank you for doing this.”

“It’s not a problem. I’ll go and see if they can give us some scrubs for you until somebody gets here with clean clothes. If you need anything, holler, okay?”

“Sure thing.” I let go of her hand and reach to my right until my fingertips graze over the sink. Brianna starts to walk away, but I stop her before she can leave. “Actually, can you do me a favor?”
