“Of course, anything.”

“Can you bring me Henry? He met you, so I don’t think you should have any issues, but if you say my name, I think he shouldn’t give you any trouble.”

“Yeah, of course. I’ll bring him to you. I already told the crew to look for the cane once the police are done at the arena, but it might take a while.”

“It doesn’t matter. I just need Henry.”

And Sebastian.

If I have the two of them, I’ll be alright.

God, let him be alright.

“I’ll get him here,” Brianna promises. “I really am sorry, Penny.”

“This was not your fault,” I repeat once again, although I’m not sure she believes me.

Promising she’ll be back soon, Brianna leaves, and I take a moment to collect myself. The whole ordeal seemed so surreal, like something out of a movie, not real life. And definitely notmylife.

Letting out a sigh, I turn the faucet to the hottest setting and grab the soap. I scrub my palms like my life depends on it, but even after doing it for five long minutes, I’m not sure if I got rid of all the blood. Deciding to call it quits, I dry my hands on a towel before taking a moment to get familiar with my space. Once I’m pretty sure I won’t fall down and break something, I take off my clothes and step into the shower.

The warm water trickles down my body, and I can feel some of the tension leave my muscles.

At some point, Brianna knocks and lets me know the scrubs are waiting for me on the sink. I stay under the spray until the water turns cold, and only then, do I make my way out. Drying, I put on the scrubs and retreat from the bathroom.

“Brianna?”

“Here.” Hurried footsteps echo against the tiles as she joins me, her fingers wrapping around my elbow. “How are you doing?”

“Okay. Was there any news?”

“Not yet. I—”

Before she can finish, I hear a commotion in the hallway, followed by a familiar barking sound. My chest squeezes, but before I can make a move, I can hear the scratching of the paws come closer, and then the seventy-pound furry body jumps onto me. Tears prickle my eyes as I wrap my arms around Henry. He lets out soft whining noises as he licks at my face impatiently, as if he’s trying to make sure I’m really okay.

“Shhh,” I whisper softly, burrowing my head into his fur, letting his smell and weight calm me down. “It’s okay. I’m okay.”

“That dog is something else,” Seraphina pants as she enters the room.

“What happened? How did you—”

“After hearing what happened, I figured I’d stop by Bash’s place and get you guys some essentials, but before I opened the door, Henry was already there waiting for me, clearly agitated. It’s like he knew something was wrong. I was half afraid that he’d run away to find you, so I figured I might as well take him with me.”

“Thank you for bringing him.”

“No problem. How is Bash? Is he out of surgery yet?”

Before she can finish the question, I can hear the sound of wheels rolling. My heart kicks up a notch as I listen to them slow down and open the door. Henry jumps down, but before he can dash for the door, I grab his collar and hold him to me.

“Easy now.”

“How is he doing?” Brianna asks as she moves us to the side so we’re not in the way.

My heart starts beating faster as I listen to thebeepingof the heart monitor, my chest feeling heavy and my fingers itching to touch him.

“The surgery went well. The doctor managed to fix his arm without much issue,” an unfamiliar female voice says as the sound of the wheels turning comes to a stop. “He’s a little bit confused from the anesthesia, so he’ll be pretty out of it.”

“He’s awake?” I breathe, letting go of Henry. The need to go to Sebastian is too strong to resist.
