I’m so focused on the girl in front of me that I don’t even have it in me to be irritated at Seraphina’s smug tone.

“I’m hanging up now.”

“Bash, don’t you…”

“I’m hanging up,” I repeat.

“Don’t do something stupid!” she rushes out before I hang up the phone. I’ll pay for that later, I’m sure, but I need to come up with a plan.

And fast.

CHAPTEREIGHT

PENELOPE

“Well, well, well…” Although her voice is soft, there is no way I’d ever mistake her Tennessee drawl. “Look who finally decided to show up.”

“Ugh, can’t I at least sit down before you start to grill me?” Enrique asks.

Taylor lets out a long sigh. “I guess so.”

Chuckling, I place my hand on the back of the chair, but Enrique is faster. His warm palm settles over mine, and the chair scrapes against the hardwood as he pulls it out. “Here, Penny.”

“Thanks.”

Climbing into the bar stool, I make room for Henry to slip underneath the table next to me so he doesn’t get in the way of people passing by or, God forbid, somebody steps on him. Because yes, although he’s a good twenty inches tall and has seventy-five pounds on him, some people don’t see him and bump into him.

That thought brings Sebastian to the forefront of my mind. The memory of his hand on mine, skin touching skin, makes goosebumps spread over my flesh, but I push it back.

I will not be thinking about him. Oh, no. Not after it took me a good ten minutes to calm down after our latest encounter.

“And you brought reinforcements too. No offense, Pens.”

“None taken.” I wave her off, tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear. “He thought you’d go easier on him if I were here.”

“Hey! Whose side are you on?” Enrique protests.

“I’m on no one’s side,” I say diplomatically. “I’m Switzerland.”

Enrique lets out a groan. “I honestly don’t know why I thought bringing you would be a good idea.”

I nudge him with my elbow. “So you don’t have to tell the same story twice?”

“Oh, the hardship! He has to talk about his adventures across Europe. Boo hoo. If he remembered we existed every now and then and texted us to let us know he’salive, he wouldn’t have to talk so much now.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

Taylor hums. “My silent phone would beg to differ.”

Enrique lets out a grunt. “I need drinks. What do you guys want? I’ll just go and grab it at the bar. It seems to be pretty busy.”

“See? Evading, again.”

“I’m not evading. I just need some alcohol to deal with your nagging.”

“I’m not nagging! I was worried about you, you asshat.” The words are accompanied by a loudsmackfollowed by a grunt. “Not that you know how to appreciate it one bit.”

“I missed you too, Tay.” Enrique hops to the floor. “Beer, good?”
