I reach for my drink, taking a long sip—a mistake.

The cool beer slides down my throat, leaving a bitter taste on my tongue.

Holy shit, that’s awful.

I raise my hand, covering my mouth so I’m not tempted to spit it out. Talk about embarrassing.

Why would anybody drink this willingly?

“You okay there?” Taylor asks, not even trying to hide her amusement.

“F-fine,” I stutter.

Is there a way I can erase this taste from my mouth? Because I need it right this moment.

“Shit, I completely forgot you don’t drink. Wait, let me…”

Enrique’s chair scrapes against the floorboards, but I place my hand over his forearm. “It’s fine. Really. I wanted to try it anyway.”

“You wanted to try beer?” he asks, and it’s hard to miss the skepticism in his voice.

“Yes, I wanted to try it,” I repeat slowly. Why is that so hard to believe? “I want to try lots of things.”

“This sounds promising,” Taylor chimes; at the same time, Enrique asks: “What kinds of things?”

Some of the more risqué items on my list pop into my head, and I can feel the heat spread under my skin.

“I…”

“As if you’re the one to ask.” Once again, I can hear that softthumpas Taylor’s leg connects to Enrique’s under the table.

“Ouch.Dammit, Tay!” Enrique protests, but she completely ignores him.

“You should try to take a slower sip,” Taylor explains. “Beer is definitely an acquired taste.”

I wrap my fingers around the glass, bringing it to my mouth. The funny smell of beer hits me first, and a part of me wants to gag.

Stop acting like a baby, I chastise before forcing myself to take the smallest of sips. My nose scrunches when the bitterness reaches my tongue. Nope, taking small sips definitely doesnotagree with me either.

“It’s weird,” I say, my tongue darting out to sweep the foam stuck to my lip. “I don’t think I’m a fan of the bitter taste or foam.”

“Maybe you should have started with something sweeter. Although those trick you really easily, and before you know it,” she snaps her fingers, “you’re drunk.”

“Honestly, I might even risk it just to wash this flavor from my mouth.”

A shudder runs through me at the thought of sitting here for another hour with this taste clinging to my tongue.

What would the chances be of me getting drunk from one drink? Slim, probably, and I guess I could always call a cab to take me home. Or Jade. She’d also probably come to get me if I asked her.

Taylor claps her hands. “Okay, let’s do it.”

I blink at the sudden sound. “What? Like now?”

“No time like the present. Besides, didn’t you just say you wanted to try lots of things?”

“I did, but…”

“No buts. I’ll grab the shots.”
