It was fascinating to watch.

Shewas fascinating to watch.

The subtle give and take. The way she kept her independence around other people while at the same time leaning on them whenever she thought it might be necessary. People like that lanky dude she came in with. He was hanging on her every word. I’m surprised the drool hadn’t started falling down the side of his mouth. That’s how obvious he was being. Well, to everybodybutPenelope.

They spent over an hour at the table with a dark-haired girl, chatting and laughing. There was even one point when she tilted her head to the side, not in my direction per se, but close. It’s like she could feel my eyes on her or something.

Which was insane.

She couldn’t see me.

But that doesn’t mean she can’t feel you staring at her like the creep you are.

Birdy shakes her head, a strand of hair falling in her face. “It doesn’t matter.”

“Oh, I think it does.”

It matters a whole lot.

I couldn’t see it. Why would a girl like Birdy flirt with a guy like that? Especially considering that friend of hers has a crush on her that can be seen from space. The way that guy stared at her all night long was irritating as hell. I guess it was a good thing she couldn’t see it, huh? Because from where I was standing, she seemed pretty much oblivious. Her girl friend, on the other hand? Not so much.

“And I think I’m going home.”

She starts to get up, but I press my other palm against the bar, caging her in so she can’t slip away. Her palm connects to my chest, and I can feel a zap pass between us at the point of contact.

She must feel it, too, because she sucks in a breath, pulling her arm back and pressing it against her chest.

My gaze drops down to those hands, the slender fingers that are capable of producing the music that haunts me, clenching and unclenching nervously.

“Not so fast, little bird,” I murmur softly, lifting my gaze.

I move closer, pushing even more into her personal space. Penelope sucks in a sharp breath, her lips parting as she stares at my chest. I slip my finger under her chin, tipping her head back. That sweet scent of roses that seems to cling to her reaches my nostrils, making my whole body go taut.Allparts of my body.

“Will you stop calling me that?”

“Why should I? It suits you.”

“It sounds patronizing and condescending. Besides, I have a name.”

“I have a name too, and yet I haven’t heard you use it.”

She tilts her head, a strand of hair slipping from behind her ear. “If I call you Sebastian, will you stop calling me Birdy?”

The way she says my name, just a hushed whisper, has goosebumps rising on my skin. It’s unnerving. The way this girl, a girl I don’t even know, seems to affect me. And it’s not just her music. It’s her. Plain and simple.

“Not a chance.”

“I didn’t think so.” She lets out a sigh. “I should really go. Henry needs to go out.”

I glance at the dog, who’s watching me with distrustful eyes, but at least he’s not growling. That’s good, right?

“He seems pretty good where he is.” I shift my attention to her. “So why did you talk to that guy?”

Her lips part, her tongue peeking out and sliding over her pink bottom lip. My gaze zeroes in on the tiny movement, and I can feel my dick twitch in interest.

Seriously, dude?

Penelope juts her chin up in defiance. “Just because you keep asking doesn’t mean my answer will change.” She places her hand on my chest, giving me a firm push as she gets to her feet. “Henry, exit.”
