“I’ll walk with you.”

The muscle in my cheek twitches in irritation. “Don’t you have something better to do than follow me around?”

“Considering I have yet to get you to agree to my proposition? No, I don’t.”

“I didn’t think so,” I mutter, giving Henry a command to cross the street.

Usually, I’d walk with Jade, but she had an early class, so we were all meeting at the diner instead.

Ignoring my bite, Bash changes the subject. “You’re going to class?”

School? That’s what he wants to talk about?

“Eventually.”

He hums, and silence settles over us for a moment. If he wanted to play this game, he could be my guest, but I wasn’t about to make it easy on him.

“It’s a beautiful day.”

Seriously? Weather? This is getting ridiculous. What are we? Living in the Regency period?

“Wouldn’t know. I can’t really see.”

Liar,my brain counters, just as Bash calls me out: “Liar. You can play the blind girl card with somebody else, Birdy. I’ve been watching you.”

The hair on my nape prickles at attention at his words. I knew he was watching me. I could feel his gaze on me. I didn’t know exactly how I knew it, but I did. From that first day we met, there was just something in the way he watched me that was distinct from all the other people. And when you’re blind, you start noticing the subtle differences in the way people stare at you, from curiosity to pity to disgust.

“You’re far smarter than you let on.”

Henry comes to a stop at the crosswalk, so I use this moment to turn to Sebastian and glare at him. “You know that sounds creepy right?”

“That you’re smart?”

I roll my eyes at him. “That you’re watching me.” Making sure there’s no ongoing traffic, I give Henry the go-ahead.

“Well, it’s true.”

“Like I said, creepy.”

“Maybe… So did you think about what we talked about last night?”

The dream that woke me up pops into my mind, but I push it back. The last thing Sebastian Black needs is to know that he invades my mind even when I’m asleep. He’s cocky enough as it is.

“Just because you keep asking doesn’t mean my answer has changed.”

“But you didn’t give me an answer.”

“If I remember correctly, I did, in fact, give you an answer that first day and it was no.”

Henry slows down until he pulls to a stop, and I know that we’re in front of Macy’s.

“I was talking about my suggestion last night. You didn’t say no to that.”

No, I didn’t. Did I?

I should have said no, cut it at the root so he’d let go of this ridiculous notion. Although would he? Sebastian didn’t seem like a person who’d give up that easily. Not when he wanted something, and for some weird reason, he wanted me. Just thinking about it has my little thirteen-year-old heart fluttering.

He doesn’t want you; he wants yourmusic,a rational part of my brain reminds me.There is a difference.
