“Okay,” I interject before they can continue with this discussion. “So, whatisup?” I slide into an open seat next to Jade and take off Henry’s harness before he lays down next to the table.

“I think we’re the ones who should be asking that question. Who was the hottie you walked here with?”

My head whips in Jade’s direction. “W-What?” my voice breaks at that one word as dread slowly seeps into me.

There is a pregnant pause before Jade asks: “You do realize we can both see, and we’re sitting by the window, right?”

My mouth falls open as the dots slowly connect in my head. I guess I should have realized that, but I was hardly paying attention to it since, even during the day, my ability to discern light from shadows is minimal.

As I’m trying to come up with an excuse, the waitress comes and saves me from answering—at least for the time being. I place my order, and the moment she walks away, Jade continues.

“So?” Jade nudges me with her elbow. “Who’s the hottie, and where have you been hiding him?”

Freaking Sebastian.

It’s like he took away my ability to think clearly when I was around him. Like about the fact people could see us together. Or that somebody could recognize him.

Did they recognize him?

It seemed highly unlikely; Jade would have said something by now. Besides, it’s not like they were his fans. The only reason they went to that concert last spring was because it was my birthday present. Well, before it was suddenly canceled, and Sebastian disappeared without a word.

“I haven’t been hiding anybody. He’s…” My words trail off as I try to come up with an explanation that won’t result in a bunch of questions from my friends that I wasn’t ready to discuss.

My first crush?

The bane of my existence?

My next-door neighbor?

Sebastian-freaking-Black.

I couldn’t say that last one. I didn’t know why he was here or what he wanted—well, I knew part of what he wanted, but I just didn’t want to give him that—but I was pretty sure he was keeping the fact that he was here on the down low considering I haven’t heard anybody talk about him. I knew for a fact that quite a few girls in my class listened to his music.

“He is what?”

“In one of my classes,” I finished.

It seemed like the most innocent answer.

“Guys who look like that, major in music?” Jade whistles softly. “I always kind of thought they were the geeky type.”

“You’re asking the wrong person; you realize that, right?” I point at my face. “Blind girl here.”

“I guess, although maybe that would give you a perfect excuse to touch them. And trust me. You really wanna touch that guy. All those muscles…”

I duck my head when I feel the color creeping up my skin at the thought of putting my hands on Sebastian. Even those few accidental touches made my skin burn. I didn’t even want to think about what it would be like to place my hands on his body with a purpose.

Nope, not going there.

“I think I’ll pass.”

The front doorbangsloudly, followed by rushed footsteps. “Sorry I’m late!” Rei chimes. “I completely spaced out in the rink. What did I miss?”

“Was it the rink or Zane that had you spaced out?” Grace chuckles softly.

“Both,” Rei admits, laughing.

As a current Winter Games gold medalist, Rei took her sport very seriously, spending more time at the rink and gym than any other place on campus. Last year she confessed that after this season, she plans to retire from professional skating and focus solely on school. But in the meantime, she planned to enjoy her last year of competing to the fullest without having to constantly worry about her scores and making the team.
