“Or maybe you should try not running when you’re obviously incapable of doing it without endangering other people. I could have fallen into traffic.”

“There is no traffic.”

Well, I don’t see that, now do I?The bitter words are on the tip of my tongue, but I swallow them down.

“Do you think that makes it okay to run into people?”

This time, he’s the one growling. “I wouldn’t have run into you if you didn’t have your head stuck in your phone and got in my way,” he repeats once again, clearly exasperated with this whole conversation.

Well, that makes two of us, buddy.

“Of course not.” I roll my eyes as Henry shifts so he’s shielding me, his growl growing louder.

“I wouldn’t!”

“Fine, you wouldn’t.”

“And call off that mutt before he bites me.”

“Mutt?” Oh, now he’s gone and done it. “Are you serious right now?”

It was one thing to act like an ass to me, but to insult Henry?

“Yes, I don’t have a wish to end up in an ER tonight on top of everything else.”

My fingers clench by my side. “Well, if you watched where you walked, you wouldn’t have to go to the ER.”

“As if you’re one to talk.” He takes a step back. “Don’t get in any other people’s way, Birdy!” The sound of his pounding feet follows his yell as he runs away. They’re so loud; I’m surprised I hadn’t heard them before he crashed into me.

Birdy?

“That’s not my name!” I shout right back, puffing a strand of hair that fell in my face. “You ran me over, dumbass,” I mutter, not that he can hear me since he’s already gone.

Like seriously, somebody could have been severely hurt.

Me.

I could have been hurt.

But did he think about that? Nope. It wasn’t his fault.

Who does he think he is?

King of the campus?

Yeah, right.

My hand falls on Henry’s back, giving him a reassuring scratch, the soothing motion calming me too.

I let out a shaky breath, my eyes falling shut as I take a moment to compose myself.

“What a mess, Henry.”

Henry lets out a soft whine, his snout nuzzling into my palm reassuringly. I brush my finger against the scratchy tip of his nose.

“He didn’t even apologize.” I crouch down, patting the ground until I find my phone. I slide my palm over the screen, expecting to find cracks, but the thing is still in one piece. I guess there is that. Pushing to my feet, I continue with my tirade, “Like seriously, who is this guy? It’s…”

The words die on my lips as our conversation replays in my head, and the realization hits me.
