“Sorry. It just threw me off. Seb—” Rei stops and corrects herself, “He’s here? Why?”

And wasn’t that the million-dollar question.

I raise my shoulders in a shrug. “I have no idea.”

“But you were talking with him. How can you not know?” Grace says. “And you both seemed pretty intense about it, too.”

“Is that about the other day?” Jade asks.

Well, now she’s gone and done it.

And sure enough, not even a second later, Rei asks, “Other day? What other day?”

“Right, you weren’t there.”

“Can we not?” I ask, letting out a frustrated huff. I so didn’t want to talk about this. Not here, or better yet, not at all.

“Oh, no, you’re not getting out of this so easily, missy,” Grace’s voice drops low so only we can hear her. “Sebastian Black, theSebastian Black, is here at Blairwood, and you met him?”

“Yes, and it’s not a big deal.”

“He’s actually acting like an ass,” Jade chimes in. “He bumped into her the other day and then blamed her for it.”

“What? Didn’t he see Henry and that big ass sign on his harness?”

“That’s what I said,” Jade mumbles around a mouthful of food. “But then he heard her playing, and now he wants her to play for him. That’s why he’s here, right?”

“He wantsyouto play for him?” it’s hard to miss the skepticism in Rei’s voice.

“That’s what I asked.”

It made no sense for him to want me, for whatever reason. Even my friends knew that.

“I mean, I know you’re talented, but he’s…” Rei whistles softly. “Damn. So, what did you tell him?”

“No, of course.”

“No?” Grace repeats, clearly surprised. “Why would you tell him no?”

“How about the most obvious reason? Because it doesn’t make any sense?” I shake my head. “Out of all the people, why would he want me? Yes, I’m a decent musician, but he’s an award-winning one.”

Your music makes me feel.Youmake me feel. And I haven’t felt anything in so long that I forgot what it’s like.

I take in a long breath, trying to calm myself. How is it possible that this man has that kind of effect on me when he’s not even here?

It feels like I’m thirteen again, blushing every time I hear somebody mention his name.

“How about because you’re freaking amazing and insanely talented, and he can see that? Because, girl, that guy out there? He sees you. Hell, I’d bet you’re the only one he sees.”

“You’re not helping, Jade,” I mutter softly, lowering my head so they can’t see the blush creeping up my neck. Henry lifts his head, placing it over my knee, so I take the excuse and put my palm on his head, giving him a soft rub.

“I just say it as I see it. That boy has itbadfor you, and he seems pretty conflicted about it too. Maybe you should at least think about it.”

“I…” I shake my head. “Can we please talk about something else? There is actually something I wanted to ask you guys.”

There is a beat of silence, and for a moment, I think they might not let the subject of Sebastian drop, but then they finally do.

“What’s going on? You sound serious.”
