His words make me snap out of my Sebastian-induced haze.

He wants to volunteer?

Angie claps her hands together. “Amazing! We’re always excited about new volunteers. Let me just grab the forms for you. I’ll be back in a jiff.”

The moment she retreats to her office in the back, I turn around and jab my finger into his chest. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“I just told you…”

“I know what you said. What I don’t understand iswhyare you doing this?”

It’s my damn list, and while I could understand and even accept his help with certain parts of it, I didn’t need him here for this.

“Because I can? It’s not like I have anything better to do these days. Might as well do some good work.”

I raise my brows in a challenge. “And you decided this is the place you wanna do it?”

“What? I love dogs!”

“Oh, I know all about your love formutts,” I scoff. He can’t expect me to believe that this is his idea of a good time.

“Hey, Henry doesn’t like me! Not the other way around.”

Apparently, hecan.

“He doesn’t like you because you call him a mutt! Besides, not everybody will fall at your feet at first sight,” I protest, lifting my hand in exasperation and letting it fall by my side.

Seriously, this man is so infuriating!

“Oh, I know that just fine.” Bash steps closer, his hand slipping under my chin, and tilting my head back, his rough thumb skimming over my jaw. “I don’t mind working hard to make you change your mind, Birdy.”

Heat floods my cheeks. “I-I’m not…”

It’s like the tingles spreading under my skin at his touch have fried my brain or something because the words are stuck on my tongue, and before I can come up with a good retort, Angie is back.

“I have your papers.”

His hand drops as I take a step back and let out a shaky breath.

Distance.

I need to put some much-needed distance between the two of us.

“I’m going to the back room if that’s okay?” I tell Angie.

“Sure. I exchanged the water earlier, but you can give them dinner. And some dogs could use a brush if you’re up for it.”

“Of course. I’m here to help.”

Following Henry’s lead, we go to the back room, where excited barks greet us from the space. My body starts to relax almost immediately.

Crouching down, I help Henry get out of the harness before pulling out my white cane from my bag. I remember Angie mentioning there is a table across from the door, along with the cabinets, in which she stores supplies with dog kennels on both sides of the room.

Making my way across the room, I use my cane as a guide until I feel it bump into something. Extending my hand, I find the cool, smooth surface of the cabinet.Bingo.Using that as a guide, I quickly find the table on my left. Making sure there is nothing on it, I place my things there before I turn back to the cabinets until I find the bag with dog food. I’m about to grab it so I can drag it to the kennels when hands land on my shoulders, startling me.

“Give me that,” Sebastian mutters before moving me to the side.

A zap of electricity goes down my spine at the touch, my fingers tightening around the cane in my hand.
