“We weren’t gawking. We were just waiting for you, and imagine our surprise when you walked there with a guy.”

Great, just the right words to make a girl seem like a loser.

“You’ve seen me with Enrique,” I protest.

“Who’s Enrique?” Sebastian asks, at the same moment, Jade says, “He doesn’t really count.”

“And why does he not count? He’s a guy.”

“Because he’s your guyfriend.”

“Lover boy?”

“What?” I turn my attention to Sebastian.

“The guy you were sitting with the other day? That’s the one?”

“Why would you call him that?”

Sebastian lets out a chuckle, “Because the dude has a crush on you, but you’re too bl—”

He stops himself at the very last second.

“You can finish it, you know. I won’t get offended.”

“But it sounds rude.”

“Why would it be rude? It’s a fact.” I shrug, used to this conversation. “I’m blind. Nothing, and nobody can change that. And honestly, I’m not sure if I would want to.”

“You wouldn’t want to see if you could?” Grace asks, reminding me that we’re not alone at the table.

“Not really.” I wrap my fingers around the leather bracelet on my wrist, spinning it around as I think back on my life and everything that has happened in the last few years. “Maybe if I was born with sight, but this is all I’ve ever known. To suddenly be able to see…” I shake my head, not sure if I can explain it properly. “It would be a whole new world for me. Besides, I’m happy with the person I’ve become. It took me a long time to get here. So no, I wouldn’t change it. Not one single thing.”

“That’s because you’re a badass,” Jade says, her hand covering mine. “And there is nothing wrong with you. You’re perfect just the way you are.”

I duck my head, letting my hair fall around me like a shield. “I don’t know about that, but I’m definitely working on it. Anyway, enough about me. Prescott, how is med school treating you?”

Prescott lets out a groan, “Med school is kicking my ass.”

“He’s exaggerating. He’s doing well and working his ass off. I even get to help occasionally.”

“I’m sorry to inform you, but dragging me out for a coffee break doesn’t count as helping.”

“But quizzing you does.” By the tone of her voice, I have a feeling quizzing is not the only thing she’s doing to motivate and help him.

“Ugh,” Grace groans. “You two really need to stop. Some of us are trying to eat.”

After that, the conversation shifts to classes and our daily life. Grace is the first one to leave once she gets a message from her boyfriend. But soon after that, my alarm goes off to let me know I have to hurry if I want to get to my class.

“And that’s my cue.” I silence the alarm, making sure everything is on the tray before I get up. “Talk soon?”

“Yes, we have to finalize the details for next weekend.”

I slide my bag over my shoulder and pick up Henry’s harness before grabbing my tray.

“I’ll walk with you.” The chair next to mine scrapes against the floor as Sebastian gets up. “Let me take that.”

His fingers wrap around my tray, pulling it out of my hand.
