“You wouldn’t say that if you could see the mean look he was giving me.”

I didn’t need to see to know Henry didn’t like Sebastian, which is weird. He’s usually very friendly toward everybody. Granted, Bash didn’t make the best first impression.

“He’s usually affectionate. He just doesn’t like you because you call him mutt.”

The entrance door creaks open, and I step into the cool early evening. “So what are we doing?”

“We’re going out for a drive,” Sebastian comments.

“A drive?”

“Yup, a drive. C’mon, it’s about a yard forward and then on the left.”

I follow his instructions, my stomach clenching tighter in anticipation with every step we make. With the help of the cane, I scan the ground for any possible obstacles when I feel it bump into something.

“That’s it. Now you’re only missing this.”

“What…”

My words are cut off when I feel something slide over my head. I raise my hands, touching the plastic covering my head.

A helmet.

“What is this? I thought you said we were going for a ride.”

“We are. A ride on my bike.”

I blink a few times, trying to wrap my head around his words.

A bike? He can’t mean…

“You’re not talking about a bike bike, right?”

“Depending on your definition of a bike.” There’s a softclickas he straps the belt under my chin. “You’re not chickening out on me, are you, Birdy?”

“Chickening out on you? What are we? Five?”

“Don’t change the subject. I’m not putting you on that bike if you’re not sure this is what you want. So are we good or not?”

I suck my lower lip between my teeth as I think it through.

Are we good?

I had no idea. I’ve never come close to a bike except when I heard them speed by me extremely loudly, much less think about sitting on one. But I couldn’t deny the trepidation building in my stomach that was mixed with curiosity.

How different could it really be?

Say yes.

That was the whole point of the list, right? To do something I wouldn’t usually do. To do something wild. Something fearless.

I let my lip pop. “Yes, we’re good.”

“Good,” Sebastian says after a heartbeat of silence. “Do you want me to put away your cane so it’s not in the way?”

I nod, folding the cane and tying it together before I hand it to him. I shift my weight from one foot to the other. The insecurities and what-ifs are starting to get to me, but I swiftly shove them to the back of my mind.

I want this, and besides, Sebastian wouldn’t let anything happen.
