“There is a part of the clearing without any obstacles on his ranch, so he lets me gallop the horse across it. The feel of the sun on your skin, the scent of freshly cut grass and wildflowers in the air, the breeze blowing my hair away from my face, I swear it’s the best feeling ever.”

I stare at her as longing passes over her face as if she can imagine the whole thing in her head.

“You really like it.”

Birdy nods her head slowly. “I do. It’s home.”

Home.

Such a simple word but so unfamiliar. I’ve had houses growing up, plenty of them over the years, but none of them were homes. None of them made me feel like I belonged. On the contrary, over the years, they’ve all started to blend together. It was just another mausoleum of a house that had to be kept spotless at all times. Even though nobody ever lived in it except for me and some staff.

Well, there was one home.

One place where for a split second, I belonged, but then I lost it too.

It’s all your fault!

Loud laughter breaks me out of my thoughts. Birdy tilts her head to the side as if she’s listening intently. “Where are we?”

“I figure we can tackle two things on your list tonight.”

One of her pale brows rises. “You anxious to get rid of me so fast?”

“No, but I found this place on one of my recent drives, and now that I know that you like riding horses and bikes, I hope you’ll like this too.”

“Please tell me you don’t expect me to ride one of those electric bull thingies because I’m not getting up on that thing.”

Her completely serious face has me choking on laughter.

This girl, seriously.

“It’s not bull riding, although the image of it.”

I’m not sure I’ll be able to get it out of my head anytime soon.

“Stop it.” She pinches my side. “So what is it?”

“They have an ax-throwing rink.”

“An ax…” Those dark blue eyes turn into saucers. “Are you crazy? Do you want me to kill somebody?”

I bark out a laugh, “You’re not going to kill anybody. The lanes are secure, and there is nobody between you and the board you’re aiming at.”

“Did you forget the part in which I’m blind?”

I cross my arms over my chest. Why is she constantly thinking so little of herself? “I thought you wanted to try something new.”

“I do, but… ax throwing?”

“Have you ever done it?” The challenge earns me a death glare. That’s answer enough. “See? Thisisperfect. C’mon, let’s go.”

I turn around and start for the entrance, but Birdy stops me in my tracks.

“Umm, Bash?”

Damn, I really hated that name coming from her lips.

“Yeah?”
