“You didn’t have to be so rude.”

“He was staring at you.”

“People always stare at me.” She shakes her head, completely unfazed by it. “He was probably wondering what crazy person brings a blind girl to throw axes around.”

“Or like how he could get in your panties.”

“My pa—” An incredulous look flashes on her face. “He did not!”

I shake my head at her naivete. “Oh, yes, he did. Trust me. Now are we throwing those axes or what?”

“You’re imagining things,” she huffs. “But fine.”

Folding her cane, she slips it into her back pocket before taking off her jacket and purse. “Is there somewhere I can put this?”

“Yeah.” I grab her things from her and take them to the high-top table next to our lane, taking off my jacket, too, before I join her. “Ready to do this?”

“I guess,” she lets out a long sigh. “Just don’t let me kill anybody?”

My gaze darts to the attendee, that’s still looking in our direction from the reception area. “I’m not making any promises.”

Penelope lets out a sigh. “That’s what I was afraid of.”

“C’mon, it’s not that bad. Want me to show it to you?”

“Sure.”

I grab one of the axes, tossing it a little in the air before I hand it to her.

“It’s actually pretty light,” Penelope comments as she tests the weight of it in her hand.

“‘Cause these are meant for throwing. You can do it with one or two hands; grip it lightly and lift it in the air.”

She does as instructed, the ax falling all the way to her back. “Like this?”

I let out a chuckle, “No need to put it all the way back. Here…”

I step behind her, and gently lift her arms, adjusting her position so the ax is placed over her head, her arm at a ninety-degree angle.

“Don’t drop it,” I whisper as I lean down, my mouth so close to her face I can feel the warmth of her skin, the sweet rose scent that’s uniquely hers filling my space and making my head spin. Damn, she smells good. All sweet and innocent and good.

She tilts her head to the side, her pink lips parting. “I don’t really have a death wish.”

Her warm breath tickles my skin, sending a shiver running down my spine.

Focus, dude.

“Okay, then. Let’s see what you’ve got.”

After a heartbeat, she nods and shifts her attention forward. “There is nobody in front of me?”

“Nope, just you and the board.”

Another nod. I’m about to open my mouth to give her instructions, but before I can, the ax is flying. A loudthumpechoes in the room as the ax hits the board and falls down on the mat underneath it.

“Well, damn. Remind me not to get on your bad side.”

She turns to me, those big eyes shining excitedly. “Did I hit it?”
