“The ax over-rotated. I think you need to move a bit closer. Wait.”

Reluctantly, I let go of her and grab the ax from the floor, handing it back to Penelope and making sure she’s standing closer. “Try again.”

This time she doesn’t hesitate. The ax flies and hits the board with a resounding thud.

“I got it this time, right?”

“You did. Two points.”

She squeals excitedly, and I can’t help but smile as I go to pick up the ax once again. We repeat the process a few more times. She throws the ax, sometimes hitting and sometimes missing, and I pick it up for her.

“Bullseye!” I yell when the ax lands right in the middle of the board.

“Yes!” She turns around and throws herself at me.

I’m so surprised I stagger back, catching my balance at the very last moment, my arms wrapping around her slender waist.

For somebody so small, she was a force to be reckoned with.

“This is so much fun.” She pulls back, that smile directed right at me, and I can feel my own heart do a weird flip in my chest. “Thank you so much for bringing me.”

Lifting my hand, I rub at the middle of my chest. “See? You haven’t even killed anybody yet.”

She slaps me on the chest. “Oh, shush! Do you want to play for points? See if a blind girl can kick your ass?”

I let out a snort. “You seriously think you stand a chance?”

“Let’s see what you’ve got.”

Unable to resist a challenge, I pick up an ax and throw it at the board. “Four points. It’s your turn, Birdy.”

Her forehead furrows as she pulls her brows together. “And how will I know that you’re not trying to trick me?”

“I don’t need to bullshit you, Birdy. I can win fair and square.”

She watches me for a moment as if she’s thinking over my words, deciding if she trusts me or not. I hold my breath, my palms turning sweaty as I wait for her verdict.

“Fine,” she agrees finally. “Let’s see if that hand is good for anything else except playing the guitar.”

“Oh, Birdy, Birdy,” I murmur softly. “If you only knew what these hands are capable of.”

That familiar red color spreads over her cheeks, making me chuckle loudly. I go to the board, picking up both our axes and handing her hers. I watch as she easily lifts it in the air with one hand and lets it fly.

“Damn.”

She blinks and turns to me. “What?”

“Another bullseye.”

A slow smile spreads over her lips. “I guess I’m winning after all.”

We continue playing for another twenty minutes before our time is up, which is good because she was seriously kicking my ass.

Together we walk out of the building, the attendant from earlier giving Birdy puppy eyes. I glare at the guy, my hand falling on the small of her back, as I hold the door open for her.

The drive back home quickly passes as she chats into my ear, this time slightly more relaxed, although her arms are still tightly holding onto me. Not that you’ll hear me complain about it.

“I’m not bringing you here another time,” I say as we climb the stairs to our floor.
