“Yeah, same ol’ same ol’,” the lie slips from my tongue before I can think better of it.

The guilt slams into me. There is nothing worse than when I have to lie to my sister about something, but I know her well. If I told her Sebastian appeared at Blairwood, and I was… helping him out? Hanging out with him? I wasn’t even sure how to put into words what exactly had been happening in the last few weeks. All I knew was that my sister would worry, and I couldn’t do that to her when she was already dealing with so much as it was.

“I have to get going, and you should really try and get some rest. Talk to you soon?”

“Okay. But Penny?”

“Hmm?”

“Don’t you think for one second that this conversation is over.”

My throat bobs as I swallow. “What? Why?”

“I know you, and I know when you’re trying to hide something from me. But you’re still processing whatever is happening, and I’m too tired to pry. So we’ll discuss it another time.”

I don’t even try to convince her since I know it would be futile. “Fine. Get some rest. Kiss Kaylee and Emmett for me.”

“You know it.”

We say our goodbyes, and I hang up the phone, Kate’s words still echoing in my head.

I got away with it, for now. I knew better than to believe she’d forget about our conversation.

Letting out a sigh, I open the video app and start filming before I give Henry the command. “Henry, store.”

SEBASTIAN

I look at the two packages of steaks in my hand, trying to decide which one to take. But the problem was, I didn’t know what the hell to do with either of them. I pinch the bridge of my nose. Why did I think this was a good idea again?

“Have you seen Bash Black?” a female asks in a hushed voice.

Chills run down my spine as awareness sweeps over me. I keep my head down, holding my breath as I continue listening in on their conversation.

“Apparently, he’s on campus. Some people have been talking about it,” the first woman continues.

“What would he be doing here? It makes no sense,” a new voice joins in.

“The hell if I know, but I heard a girl talk about it in class. She talked to him.”

The two women pass behind me, and my whole body stiffens. “I’ll believe it when I see it. What else did we need to buy?”

I wait until their voices trail off before placing the steaks back in place. Delivery it is. I pull out my phone and quickly open my delivery app. With a few taps, I have the order placed, and it should be delivered just around the time I arrive home.

Perfect.

Turning around, I decided to stroll through the store and grab some snacks on my way out instead. I’m walking through the aisles, grabbing snacks and drinks, when one of my songs starts playing on the radio.

Great, just what I needed.

Pulling the brim of my hat lower, I decide to call it a day and go to the checkout. But when I turn the corner, I come to a stop because no one other than Penelope is standing there with Henry.

Her lips move as she whispers something, a smile playing on her lips as she and Henry walk toward me. No, she’s not whispering. She’s humming.

To my fucking song.

I cross my arms over my chest and wait for her to come closer.
