“Not a fan, huh?” I ask once she’s in hearing range.

I watch as surprise flashes on her face, those dark-blue eyes widening in surprise, fingers clenching around the phone in her hand.

Seriously, what was with her and that damn phone? Didn’t she learn her lesson the last time?

“Sebastian? What are you doing here?”

My brow quirks up. “We’re at the store, Birdy.”

“You do your own shopping?” she asks, the surprise clear on her face.

“Of course I do my own shopping. Who else would do it?”

“I—” She lowers her head, her hair falling like a curtain around her face. “It doesn’t matter.”

The hell it doesn’t.

I take a step forward. My hand slips under her chin and lifts it, my eyes zeroing in on her face. My voice drops, so only she can hear me, “You can say it, you know. Your secret is out.”

“W-what secret?”

“You know who I am. Not just that, you alsolikemy songs.”

Her mouth falls open, and even though I didn’t think it was possible, those mesmerizing eyes widen further. She’s like a deer caught in the headlights. “That’s not…”

I press my thumb over her lower lip. She sucks in a breath, the words dying on her lips.

“Your secret’s revealed, Birdy. No sense in lying.”

That pretty pink flush spreads over her cheeks at being caught, and I can’t help the smirk that flashes on my face.

“What I can’t understand is why hide it?”

It made no sense. I didn’t try to hide who I was. Not from her. Maybe I was a fool for doing it, but I trusted she’d keep my secret, and so far, she had. Even when I met her friends, they didn’t say anything on that topic. So why just not admit that she knows exactly who I am? Not just that, but that she also likes my music.

I couldn’t help the swell of pride that spread over my chest at the thought.

Penelope rolls her eyes. “As if you need any more boost to your ego.”

I just stare at her for a moment before letting out a soft chuckle, “Touché, Birdy.”

Tou-freaking-ché.

“The better question is, what are you doing here?”

I couldn’t see any sign of a basket or cart. It was just her and Henry and that damn phone in her hand. Seriously, what was up with that?

“I already bought what I needed, but then I figured why not stay a little longer and practice with Henry since we’re already here.”

Her shoulders lift in a shrug.

“Practice? What would you—”

“Mommy, look! Puppy!” a little voice squeals.

I turn around to see a small girl rushing toward Henry. A huge grin is spread over her lips, and her pigtails bounce with every step she takes. However, her mother is faster. She places her hand on the girl’s shoulder and tugs her back. “You can’t touch this puppy, baby,” the woman says gently, shooting us an apologetic smile.

The girl purses her lips. “Why not?”
