Bathroom ninja for the win.

I took another step toward the door, my heart thudding in my chest. This is it, Rory. Let ’em come out and smack ’em in the face.

The door burst open, and I hurled the tray forward. It smacked my best friend’s nose and sent her crying to the ground. It fell beside her with a dull thud.

I didn’t hear the thud because I was down on the floor beside her, trying to comfort her and hush her sobs at the same time.

“Oh, God, Chelsea!” I whispered, utterly aghast.

“What the hell, Rors?” she groaned, clutching her nose. Thankfully, there was no blood, but she did look like she was about to play a clown at a kid’s birthday party.

“I’m so, so sorry!” Part of me was panicking, while the other part desperately wanted to laugh.

She looked at me with injured eyes. “Here I was, feeling like a smooth criminal, and you had to hit my nose and ruin it.”

We both began giggling. Then we laughed until tears ran down our faces and we were almost doubled up.

Once I’d composed myself, I got her some tissues and checked for any bruises.

“How did you even get in?”

“A bit of this and that,” she muttered, pressing the tip of her nose gingerly. “I had some help from the gardener. Cute guy, totally taking him out later.”

“Chelsea!”

“What? Just because we’re on a sting doesn’t mean I can’t have fun!”

Fair enough.

“Okay, we need to get you ready. And I’ll take the food and send it for testing immediately. I need you to leave some crumbs. When the bastard gets here, he should think you’ve eaten. And had at least one drink.”

We got busy with clearing up the three glasses of champagne on the counter. She poured it all into a flask, did the same with the soup, and packed the sandwiches and cakes into a little box.

She saw the wistful look on my face and smiled. “Hey, I’ll take you out on a coffee, cake, and sandwich date after all this is over. Just don’t quit on me. Deal?”

I nodded. We both knew how freaked out I was internally.

“Deal,” I whispered.

“Good. I’ll go back the same way I came, but let’s get you ready first.”

I turned to my bed. The dress lying there reminded me of the prom I never got to attend.

I didn’t have a date. And when the day came, I couldn’t bear showing up alone.

Far cry from tonight, where I completely expected to be in the limelight. I couldn’t tell which felt worse.

The mermaid, V-neck dress was soft powder-blue with intricate lace detailing. Chelsea helped me put it on.

It slid like water over my curves, hugging and accentuating everything.

She helped me fix the wire to the underside of my dress. I tied my hair into a thick French ponytail.

A subtle shade of rose for my lips, smoky eyes, and a bit of shimmer for my shoulders.

The fern tattoo gleamed under the yellow lights of the room. When I’d had it done, it was a symbol of a second chance for me.

For there would always be an apocalypse. It was the way of the world.
