"What's going on?" I asked, craning my neck to see.

"Looks like someone's stuck on the roof," Chelsea said, her eyes widening. "We gotta help them!"

"Uh, exactly how do you propose we do that?" I asked, incredulous.

But before I could stop her, Chelsea had dashed off to find a ladder. I groaned and followed her, praying we wouldn't get arrested.

"Here, hold this!" Chelsea said, thrusting a rusty ladder at me.

I gingerly held onto the ladder as Chelsea scrambled up it like a monkey.

She disappeared onto the roof, and I could hear her shouting encouragement into the air.

I couldn't even see who she was trying to help.

"Come on; you can do it! Just hop in!"

Huh?

I rolled my eyes and leaned against the building, resigned to waiting for Chelsea to finish her rescue mission.

After what felt like an eternity, she reappeared, grinning from ear to ear.

"I got 'em down!" she crowed, punching the air triumphantly.

"Please tell me you didn't just climb up to a random rooftop to save a pigeon," I said, deadpan.

Chelsea looked sheepish. "Okay, maybe it wasn't a person. But still, we did a good deed today!"

My best friend, y’all. One of the many reasons I love her, honestly.

We found a little ice cream shop called Scoop Up! as we walked toward the subway. It looked like something out of a storybook.

Glittery fairy lights twinkled over Chantilly lace draperies and big, airy windows. Glass jars of candy lined the shelves, and the air was perfumed with the sweet scent of sugar.

I couldn't help but smile as I approached the counter, where a cheery employee greeted me.

It was the perfect ending to our wild shopping adventure, a scoop of creamy, decadent ice cream in a beautiful little shop that felt like a fairytale come to life.

We sat down with our lush coconut double-scoop cones, and Chelsea finally hit me with the question I’d been waiting for.

“So, how was your first day?”

I sighed and told her everything, from barging into McDreamy to our discussion in class.

Chelsea grinned at the end. “Girl, you’re on a roll. First, the hottie from last night, and now this? You go!”

I blushed and considered burying my face in my cone. “It feels so uncharacteristic of me, though, Chels. Why is this happening?”

She shrugged. “I think it’s great. I think you’re finally letting your guard down, and this city is big enough to allow that. It’s time, Rors.”

I ignored the fluttering in my heart.

“What if it’s all a mistake, and I fall as hard as I did last time?”

“That’s you saying you’ve read the whole book on the first page. Listen.”

She leaned in and touched my shoulder. “What happened with Sam? It’s done.” She gave me her best impression of Kylo Ren.
