“You probably already guessed all of this, but I wanted to tell you the truth. I want you to know that I’m truly good. I’m happy and safe.” She giggled slightly. “I think you would get along with all of them. You and Silas would bicker more than he and Rayen already do. Your feistiness would infuriate him, and his possessiveness would drive you insane.”

She laid her head into Evangeline’s lap and ran her thumb over her hand, more to soothe herself than her sister. Amon remained frozen while Rayen gently rubbed Gwen’s back.

After a while, Evangeline’s pump started beeping and Gwen quickly turned it off.

“Let’s get you back so I can unhook you.”

Rayen stood up and started pushing the wheelchair. Amon had picked a whole bouquet of roses that Gwen only now seemed to have noticed.

“They are pretty.”

“I thought you might like a few for yourself and leave a few for Evangeline.”

“We can ask Stacy to get us a vase.”

Back in her room Gwen unhooked Evangeline while Amon filled the vase that Stacy had given them with water. Not wanting to disturb everyone at lunch, Amon and Rayen waited by the front desk for Gwen, who was settling Evangeline with the others at the table. Amon seemed to feel the same as Rayen–speechless over what they’d just overheard. Her blunt honesty–not just towards her sister, but them too–felt overwhelming. Her feelings were so pure that the sheer thought of losing her someday broke him.

She hooked her arm into Rayen’s as they all walked back to the car. “Can we stop for lunch on the way back?”

“Where would you like to stop, little bird?”

She smiled amused as she looked up at Amon, “Maybe somewhere where Amon can practice his drive-through skills.”

“Sounds fantastic to me,” Rayen snickered.

Amon opened the car door and helped her into the passenger seat. “I’d do anything for you.”

Just like she’d taught Rayen, she guided Amon through the steps of a drive-through and praised him afterwards. It was still surreal to see them so casually together. Gwen had turned Amon into a completely different man. Or maybe he was finally able to be the man he’d always been.

Looking down on his phone he saw a text from Silas. “Silas is asking if you would like to meet at the store or if you want to go home first.”

“Meeting at the store sounds good,” she said in between bites. “Will you try on things too or is it just me?”

“Your wish is my command.”

“Maybe we can find something that matches.” Her cheeks turned redder with each word. “I always thought it was super cheesy when couples did that, but it’s adorable.”

“I would love to be cheesy for you. I think Amon would do it too but Silas might need a little convincing.”

His words made her giggle. “I just have to wear something black.”

Silas was already waiting in the store for them, with a very anxious saleslady busying herself as far away from him as she could. Gwen’s feet sped up as she walked toward her third man and pulled him into a kiss.

“How did you make it here before we did?” Then she paused as the realization hit her. “Never mind, I already know. I like you wearing button up shirts.”

“Only for you.”

She pecked his cheek with a kiss. “Thank you for dressing up.” A little timid, she looked around. “I guess it’s my turn to dress up now?”

“Anything you don’t like to wear?” Amon asked with slight guilt on his face.

She shrugged her shoulders. “Not sure to be honest.”

“How about you sit, little bird while we each choose something to try on first so we can get a feel for what you like?”

She nodded, and immediately the saleslady handed her a glass of champagne before turning her attention to the men. Gwen watched as they all walked around and picked something out. She was patient with them all day, though she cringed every time she looked at a price tag. After she’d chosen a dress for the race, she allowed them to each buy her two more outfits. Though it seemed that she was doing so more for them than for herself.

As they walked out of the store, Silas took her hand and led her to another store that made her face burn up. The closer they got to the lingerie store, the faster her heart raced.
