They walked back to the stalls where she patted Windbreaker and Rayen started talking business with Mr. Black. At a distance that wouldn’t upset Windbreaker, of course.

As they walked back, she looked up at Rayen, weaving her fingers with his. “I wanted to correct him, but I liked being called Mrs. Seavey.”

With beaming eyes, he squeezed her hand. “Is that something you would like? Taking our name?”

She couldn’t help but grin when she tried to imagine all three of them trying to propose to her. “I do like the thought of it.”

“Whenever you’re ready, we would be honored for you to take our name.”

When they arrived home, Silas was waiting by the door as they drove up the driveway. She chuckled and grinned as Rayen sped around the car and helped her out. Silas impatiently waited as she walked closer. He pulled her into his arms, lifted her up, and pressed his lips on hers. She wrapped her legs around his sleek waist as she ran her fingers over the stubble of his shaved head.

“I would appreciate it if you didn’t suffocate her,” Rayen snarled. “We haven’t been gone for that long.”

Silas broke the kiss and let Gwen take a deep breath. “Have you been impatiently waiting all day?”

“Of course. Any amount of time spent away from you is too long.”

She ran her nose over his jawline as he carried her to the kitchen. Looking up, she saw Amon setting the table with some take out. Their eyes met as she freed herself from Silas and wrapped her arms around Amon. He leaned down and gently kissed her forehead.

“Did you two have fun?”

“We did, but I don’t think my heart will survive another bet of Rayen’s.”

Rayen chuckled and took the glass Silas was handing him. Dinner was spent planning their trip on Wednesday. As Gwen walked up the stairs to change clothes, her phone started ringing.

Without much thought she picked up and chirped, “This is Gwen, who am I speaking with?”

“Gwendoline, this is Stacy.”

“Hello Stacy.”

“I was hoping you could come in this evening.”

By Stacy’s tone Gwen already knew this wasn’t good. “What happened?”

“I would rather talk to you in person.”

“Stacy, please just tell me.”

There was a long pause in which Gwen could only hear Stacy’s breathing.

“Please,” Gwen begged, needing to hear out loud what she knew would break her heart.

“Gwendoline I’m so sorry to inform you that we’ve just found Evangeline in her bed without vital signs. We’ve called the doctor to confirm, but she seems to have passed away.”

Silas

Before Gwen was able to take in the words coming from the speaker of her phone, Silas was by her side. Her hand started shaking and the phone slipped out of it. Amon, who’d been by her side just as fast as Silas, caught the phone before it hit the floor.

With a soft, yet still professional tone he started talking to Stacy. “Stacy, this is Amon, we met yesterday while we visited Evangeline. Do you mind if I discuss the next steps with you? Gwendoline isn’t feeling well.”

Gwen’s legs caved in, and she collapsed into Silas arms. Her heart pumped irregularly as all the blood faded from her face. While Silas picked her up bridal style, Rayen gently ran his fingers over her cheeks. Amon walked off, not wanting Gwen to hear or worry about Stacy’s next words. Silas looked down at her pale face and shaking body with worry. Not sure how to react, he looked up at Rayen, seeking his advice.

“Let’s lay her down on the coach. I think she’s in shock, and we should lay her down with her legs up to keep her from passing out.”
