Silas walked back down the stairs at human speed. Rayen was already waiting by the couch. Silas gently laid her down, while Rayen lifted her legs up to help the blood rush back to her brain.

“Evie,” she whispered, her eyes staring into nothing as tears started to spill from them.

“Shhh…” Rayen hummed, gently running his hand up and down her leg in a soothing manner. “It’s alright, little bird.”

“Evie,” she whispered again, in a more pleading tone.

Silas quickly kneeled next to her, taking her hand in his. “We’re here.”

“No,” she argued. “I want Evie.”

Silas had never felt this helpless as he looked to Rayen, who seemed to feel the same.

Amon kneeled down next to Gwen and took her face in his hands, gently brushing away her tears with his thumbs. “Would you like to go see Evangeline?”

She nodded, more tears running down her cheeks and into Amon’s palms.

“We’ll take you, but you need to understand she is gone.”

She started sobbing, her face slowly regaining its color.

“Gwendoline, do you understand that?”

“Yes,” she whimpered between sobs.

Amon nodded and stood up.

Rayen gently let down her legs and Silas picked her up again, holding her close to his chest. He wasn’t sure this was the right thing to do, but he trusted Amon. He’d gone through this kind of pain and knew more about losing someone than Rayen and Silas did. While Silas carried Gwen to the car, Amon and Rayen quietly talked.

“What will happen now?” Rayen asked, his tone just as insecure as Silas felt.

“Stacy said they will keep Evangeline until the doctor confirms her death. Until that time, Gwendoline can be with her sister.”

“What happens then?”

“Stacy said Gwendoline made arrangements for this when Evangeline moved into the care home. The care home always recommends arranging these things before they happen so it’s less stressful when they do.”

Rayen opened the door for Silas so he could sit inside. Like the good girl she was, Gwen scooted off his lap and sat in the middle seat, strapping the seat belt on before leaning against his shoulder again.

While he laid his arm around her shoulders, Rayen sat next to her, pushing his arm between the seat and her lower back. Amon, as usual, was driving.

Her little sobs were heartbreaking. They tore right through Silas’s soul. He tried to soothe her by gently running his hands over her, but he knew it meant nothing to her at that moment. He now understood what Amon tried to warn them about when they suggested turning her sister. Though Evangeline had been gone mentally for many years, her death broke Gwen’s heart.

Rayen kept handing her tissues, but also soothed her by rubbing his hands over her back and thigh. While Amon seemed calm as always, Rayen seemed just as lost as Silas felt. Neither of them had ever experienced a loss like that and both were clueless of what to do.

Amon parked close to the entrance, keeping the distance Gwen had to walk to a minimum. Helping her out, he walked by her side while she held onto Amon’s arm. Silas now deeply regretted the fact that he hadn’t met Gwen’s second soul.

It was already late, and most of the hallways had dimmed lights. As they walked, a nurse stepped out of one of the rooms, but Gwen seemed to have tunnel vision and walked right past her.Rayen stopped by the nurse and struck up a conversation while he followed Gwen.

Evangeline’s room was much homier than he’d expected. There were pictures hung up and memorabilia all over the room. Her bed was a modern hospital bed, in which she was laying, a fluffy pillow beneath her head and a cozy blanket covering her up.

Though Silas remembered what Rayen had told him about Evangeline, the sight of her shocked him. She looked nothing like their sweet Gwen. Her eyes were closed, and she looked peaceful, but her cheekbones and thin pale skin showed a life of suffering.

Gwen pulled the blanket back and laid next to her sister. Silas wanted to stop her, he didn’t want her to hug a corpse, but Amon laid a hand on his shoulder and held him back.

“She needs this,” Amon whispered, his voice heavy with emotion, but so quiet that only Silas was able to hear him.

Rayen came through the door and had the same reaction as Silas, causing Amon to lay a hand on his shoulder too.
