After returning with Evangeline’s urn, she sat it by the painting that Amon had set on her desk the night before. She stood, staring at it, imagining her sister standing next to her and holding her the way she was in the picture. Only a gentle knock on the door pulled her out of her imagination. It was Silas.

“May I come in?”

“Always.”

He came closer and stood behind her, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, his voice dripping with guilt.

“For what?”

“For not understanding. For giving you a hard time.”

“You only said what I often thought.”

“Though it wasn’t my place to judge.”

“Don’t feel bad. I would prefer brutal honesty over a gentle lie at any time.”

“You are too kind.”

“And you are too hard on yourself. I often thought the same things you did. Those thoughts were always in my head and still would’ve been there even without people around me saying them out loud.”

He pulled her closer, his lips caressing her neck.

“Have you ever lost someone you loved?”

“I came close.”

“Who?”

“You.”

His confession melted her heart. He loved her. Though she’d suspected it, hearing it was like honey sealing an old, painful wound.

“You’ve been the only one to make me feel so vulnerable after you left. I never want to feel that way ever again.”

“I never want to be without you either.”

He held her for a while before her stomach growled loud enough to let everyone in the house know she was hungry.

She giggled and Silas took her hand, pulling her down to the kitchen where Rayen was already waiting for her. With Rayen by her side, and Amon and Silas sitting at the table, she felt content. Amon, as usual, was working, his laptop in front of him while Silas was reading a book leisurely sitting in his chair. It felt good, and she never wanted that to end.

The next morning was easy going. Silas packed her suitcase while she got dressed. Amon was squeezing some work in while Rayen watched Silas, complaining about his choice of clothes. Gwen enjoyed their bickering. Leaning against the doorway, she watched Rayen tease Silas and Silas becoming more aggravated with each word that came out of Rayen’s mouth.

“Why don’t you pack your own fucking suitcase for her?”

“Wonderful idea.”

Rayen jumped up and moved so fast Gwen lost track of him. A few moments later he stood by the bed and zipped up a small bag.

“I’m even faster than you.”

“Fuck you. You know I could do that too.” Silas disappeared too, and a moment later closed an overflowing suitcase.

“Have you three packed your suitcases?”

“The house already has a full wardrobe for us.”

“Oh of course,” she giggled. “How could I forget? Super rich and all.”
