“I wasn’t.” She lifted her head and continued with a straight face. “That’s not the budget that was discussed in the meeting. In the meeting, there was a discussion about a band for entertainment, which is missing here.”

His eyes slimmed as he looked at her.

“I sent out the meeting’s summary afterwards and asked to be informed about any changes, which I wasn’t.”

He slightly leaned forward, his face still hardened. “I don’t like liars, Ms. Moore.”

“I’m not lying.”

His accusation made her blood boil, but she needed to stay calm. Her whole life and well being was tied to this job. If she lost her cool, she would lose everything.

“So, you are suggesting Mr. Mayors is lying?”

“I didn’t suggest anyone was lying.”

His face remained stoic as he straightened to his full height, looking down on her. His eyes met hers, dark yet with less anger. She held his gaze, her head held up high. She knew she hadn’t done anything wrong, so there was no need to make herself smaller than she was.

He slightly nodded as if he agreed.

“Is there anything else I can do for you, Mr. Seavey?”

His lips slightly twitched into an amused smile, but only for a second before he straightened his face again. “No, Ms. Moore.”

She nodded, turned on her heel, and left. Her heart was hammering in her chest. The whole situation scared her to death. Not because she was afraid of him but because everything depended on this job. If she lost it, her whole life would shatter. She sat back down and looked over her budget and added a savings allowance to make sure she wouldn’t have to start all over again with nothing in case this went south.

The next morning, she took a quick shower, fixed her hair and chose an outfit that wasn’t too fancy but also not too casual. Her heart pounded in her chest as she walked over to the office and stepped inside. Mr. Seavey seemed more himself again. He looked up from his screen, his eyes slightly widening.

“There is nothing scheduled for you today but there are multiple open houses you have been invited to.” She handed him the schedule. “Is there anything else you need?”

“No, Ms. Moore.”

“The first gardener will be here at ten and the last one will come at two.”

“The gates will be open.”

She nodded and turned to leave.

“Ms. Moore.” He waited for her to turn back around. “I have made sure all information will be forwarded to you as soon as it is available.”

“Thank you.”

He looked back down at his screen to signal that this conversation was over. She closed the door behind her and took a deep breath. He didn’t seem like a man who apologized, but him making sure she got all the information was at least somewhat close to one.

She waited for the first gardener to arrive and stepped out of her apartment as he drove up the driveway. He was a young man in his mid thirties with bronzed skin from working in the sun.

He reached his hand out. “Ms. Moore I assume?”

“Good morning Mr. Sanchez.”

“Beautiful property you have here.”

“My employers just moved here and would like an estimate on the maintenance.”

“The whole property?”

She nodded. “Yes, I would suggest we walk to give you the full view of what needs to be done?”

He followed her to a path that led around her apartment. She hadn’t yet walked the property herself, and she hoped he wouldn’t notice her insecurities.
