She couldn’t help but blush. She thought his gesture was a little over the top. By the glimmer of mischief in his eyes, she knew he was doing so to bother Mr. Seavey. He sat down next to his brother, who quickly drove off and sped down the driveway.

“Gwendoline, have you always lived in Houston?” Rayen asked casually, while Mr. Seavey’s jaw tensed.

“I have.”

“Do the summers get as horrible as I was told?”

“Yes, it gets quite hot.”

“Well let’s hope our air conditioning never fails us.”

She wanted to ask about Los Angeles, but was too afraid of what Mr. Seavey would think of that and stayed quiet. She looked down on her phone and answered a few emails, praying for the ride to end soon. Rayen seemed like someone she could easily talk to, but Mr. Seavey clearly hated that idea.

As they reached the downtown traffic Rayen visibly got annoyed. “What a nightmare.”

Mr. Seavey didn’t respond, verbally or nonverbally.

“I can’t believe you make her drive through this every day, when you know you have to drive to the office yourself.”

Mr. Seavey’s grip tightened around the steering wheel. “I’m not a chauffeur.”

The conversation was clearly over and even Rayen didn’t dare to say another word. After the car was parked, Mr. Seavey stepped out immediately, slamming the door with a loud thump behind him. He was gone before she could get out herself. Rayen walked next to her in silence, and she didn’t dare to break it.

Even without his brother close he opened every door that they came across—even her office door–before heading to the main office at the end of the hallway. Right after her first meeting ended, she returned to her office and saw that she had a message from Mr. Seavey.

Ms. Moore, meet me in my office after your meeting has ended.

She grabbed her notepad before heading to his office. She knocked and stepped in to find Mr. Seavey sitting at the desk and Rayen standing by the window in the far back. He turned as she stepped closer, his eyes sparkling in the sunlight.

“You asked to see me, Mr. Seavey?”

“See how confusing it is?! I have no idea if she is talking to me or you.”

Mr. Seavey tried to look calm, but his eyes gave his annoyance away. “Ms. Moore, let Mr. Sanchez know that he may start working on the garden next week.”

She nodded. “Of course.”

“Let me and my brothers know each time he is scheduled to come.”

“I’ve asked him to come twice a month and have all the yard work done within a day.”

“Wonderful, we appreciate that,” Rayen chimed in.

She could’ve sworn to have seen a slight eye roll from Mr. Seavey before he continued and handed her a paper. “I won’t be attending these meetings, but Rayen has chosen to take my place.”

She looked down at the paper and nodded. “I’ll change the schedules. Is there anything else?”

“No.”

She gave them both a smile and left.

Claudia joined her for lunch in her office and came straight to the point before even sitting down properly. “Was that one of the other two Seaveys this morning?”

“Yes.”

Claudia giggled. “He seems less scary.”

Gwen laughed. “Yes, he is.”
