Silas behind him grinned slightly, his face lighting. Her heart sped up a little. That tiny grin on his face changed him from good looking to the hottest man she’d ever seen. She quickly looked away, nodded towards Rayen, and got to her feet.

She looked from Rayen to Mr. Seavey, “Thank you again.”

“Family always comes first, Gwendoline.”

Rayen nearly hummed her name, which only made her heart jump in her chest even more. She quickly walked out, hoping they wouldn’t see her inner workings on her face. She couldn’t help but think of them in a way that she shouldn’t be thinking of her bosses.

This wouldn’t end well for her if she didn’t keep her cool.

Rayen

Rayen stood at the window staring over downtown Houston as the midday sun burned down on the city. His gaze traveled down onto the patio of the skyscraper that was reserved for the employees to take their breaks. He found what he was looking for right away. Gwendoline, the little bird Amon had taken under his wing, was sitting right at the edge with Claudia, the receptionist.

Being a vampire, his eyesight was fantastic. Though she was twenty floors beneath him, he could see her clearly. Her auburn hair was moving slightly in the wind, her blue eyes glowing as she laughed about something Claudia had said. She had something about her that drew him in, which was highly unusual for him. Of course, in his young years, he’d sought out human women to fuck and drain, but he’d grown out of the power thirsty man he used to be.

As the years passed, he’d calmed down in the same way a teenager grows up. Especially after meeting Amon, he’d matured and was now somewhat tame. Humans hadn’t interested him much anymore, unless it was for feeding, but even that had changed after they’d discovered blood banks.

Gwendoline tilted her head back, soaking up the sun shining down on her. His lips twitched into a smile as he watched the sun turn her hair an even richer red. Today, she was wearing a skirt with a white blouse and gray blazer. She was what one would call a natural beauty, not covering her face with awful make-up as Claudia did.

They both got up and walked out of his sight. He turned to Amon, who was sitting at his desk reading through papers and managing their companies and stocks. Amon had always been distant and reserved. He buried himself in his work, hiding himself within it.

Small, timid footsteps came closer before Gwendoline knocked on the door and stepped inside. Even after spending a whole week with her, he would never be able to get used to her peachy rose scent, let alone be able to get enough of it. It was intoxicating, and clearly, he wasn’t the only one affected by it. Amon stiffened in his seat, his eyes glued to the papers on his desk.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but this letter came in the mail and I’m not sure if it’s personal or business.”

With a smile Rayan stepped closer and reached for the letter in her hand. “Let’s take a look, shall we? Maybe one of my past love interests is inviting me to her wedding.”

He couldn’t help it. He wasn’t usually a humorous man, but he loved seeing her full pink lips twitch into a smile. He enjoyed it even more because he knew he was making her smile. Opening the heavy square letter, he glanced at it.

“It’s business. We’re invited to an open house in Los Angeles.”

He gave it to Amon who took the letter from him with a stiff arm.

“What do you think? Should we go or send someone?” Rayen asked.

Rayen of course knew the answer–neither of them ever went to those kinds of events. For him, it was beneath him to work, and Amon avoided such distractions. This time though, Rayen had other plans. He turned to Gwendoline before Amon could answer his question.

“Have you ever been to L.A.?”

She seemed a little surprised by his question. As usual, when he asked her anything personal. Her eyes flickered to Amon–she knew he hated non-work-related talk–before her eyes fixed back on him.

“No, I haven’t.”

“I believe it is time for you to go see it then.”

Gwendoline looked confused and Amon gave him a warning glance. Rayen took the invitation out of Amon’s hands and handed it back to Gwendoline.

“The open house is next Saturday. I think we all should go to take a look, and you can have the opportunity to see Los Angeles.”

Her heart started racing, turning her cheeks a sweet rose color. “Would you like me to plan the trip?” she asked, a little timid.

Before Rayen could say anything, Amon stepped in. “If that is what he believes is best, he can also plan it.” Even though Amon was hiding his anger pretty well, Rayen knew he was fuming on the inside.

It amused Rayen to see Amon like that. It was one of the reasons he’d joined him all week in the office. Not to work, but to see him flustered like this. He may be a little more tame than in his younger years, but that didn’t mean he didn’t like some kind of entertainment.
