“Of course I can. Don’t worry Gwendoline, all you’ll have to do is pack your suitcases.”

Her eyes flickered to Amon again before resting back on him. “Should I cancel all Friday appointments?”

“I think it is best if we fly Thursday, so cancel those appointments too.”

She nodded and turned her attention back to Amon. “Mr. Voiley has been calling and requesting a meeting. He has been quite persistent.”

Annoyance mixed with Amon’s anger. “What is it about?”

“I believe he isn’t satisfied with the marketing strategy of his home. It seems like he and Mr. Dwaine aren’t getting along, and neither are listening to the other. I tried to offer myself to negotiate but Mr. Voiley insisted he would like to talk to you.”

“Make an appointment with both of them for Monday morning.”

“Would you like to see them both at the same time?” Amon nodded and she gave him a quick nod before asking her usual question. “Is there anything else I can do?”

Amon didn’t answer and looked back down at his papers without reading them.

“No, thank you, Gwendoline.”

As soon as she’d left the door, Amon let his anger free. He wasn’t the man to scream and shout or break things, but his tone said it all.

“You shouldn’t have invited her. It’s too dangerous.”

“What’s the difference between inviting her to live with us and inviting her on a business trip?”

Amon’s anger intensified, but this time it was towards himself.

“Will you ever explain to us why you’ve hired her? Her resume doesn’t exactly scream ‘hire me’, does it?”

Amon stayed silent. He’d avoided answering Rayen’s and Silas’s questions for the past two weeks, though his behavior said it all. Gwendoline, their little bird, had him wrapped around her finger without even knowing it.

“Even if you don’t tell us, we both know it’s because you enjoy her company.”

Guilt spread through Amon’s eyes, and it was then that Rayen finally understood why Amon was acting so strangely, especially towards Gwendoline. Amon felt guilty for wanting to be around her. He hated himself for what he felt towards her, because his loyalties were still with the woman he’d sworn to love over four hundred years ago. He was still loyal to the woman who had died in his arms growing his child.

Amon and Rayen hadn’t talked much about it, yet over the years he’d been able to fit the little bits and pieces of information together that Amon shared with him. For a second he pitied Amon, then he just felt pure sadness. The man was falling for a woman, yet his heart still belonged to his late wife.

“You need to let her go.”

Amon didn’t reply, but instead the guilt turned to hurt and grief. Rayen turned back to the window and watched as the sun slowly moved over the horizon. He listened as Gwendoline answered phone calls, always polite but stern if needed. She held back a lot of her personality around them, knowing that they were her bosses.

It bothered him. He would’ve preferred for her to act as freely as she liked with him, but Amon wouldn’t approve. It wasn’t just Amon’s disapproval, but they also had to be careful with her not to reveal who they were. They wouldn’t hurt her, but she could expose them or be scared of them, which he didn’t want either. He’d enjoyed the past few days and wanted to have his little bird around him for a little bit longer.

He heard gentle footsteps come closer and a knock on the door. He inhaled deeply. Even though he didn’t need the air to live, he couldn’t get enough of her scent.

“I just came to say my last meeting has ended.”

“Perfect,” Rayen said and turned to her.

Amon was already walking past her towards the exit. Rayen finally understood why he was giving Gwendoline the cold shoulder. He wanted her close, but didn’t at the same time. By keeping her at a distance, he felt as if he was keeping his promise to his wife.

Yet, Amon was clearly hurting Gwendoline, even scaring her if he’d overheard her and Claudia correctly. It angered Rayen that his little bird was scared of Amon, yet he knew he couldn’t do anything about it. He walked beside her, looking down at her gorgeous frame. She had beautiful curves, her chest slightly showing in the blouse, giving him a tiny peek of what was hiding just a few inches out of sight.

He stepped into the elevator and saw Amon’s warning eyes on him. He grinned and shrugged his shoulders. They all knew without words that Gwendoline was having a great effect on all of them. Silas, who’d been isolating himself for quite some time, was struggling being so close to a human, but it wasn’t just his thirst. He was aroused by her and had a harder time hiding it than Rayen.

He helped her into the SUV. At first, he’d done so to tease Amon, make him mad, maybe even make him lose his temper. But then he’d seen her sweet smile and had stuck to it, wanting to see it over and over again. The ride was quiet as usual and more relaxed than the first day. With each day Gwendoline shared the ride with them, Amon had relaxed more. Maybe he was slowly giving in.

As she climbed out of the car and walked towards her apartment, he called for her, “Gwendoline, do you mind coming to the office with me for just a moment?”
