She sat on the bed and sobbed for who knew how long. That was why she never brought gifts and only celebrated their birthdays because the care home insisted. Situations like that painfully reminded her that even though Evangeline was still there physically, mentally she was far gone. It made Gwen question over and over again if she was doing the right thing by coming to visit her. After all, she wasn’t gonna know if she didn’t, was she?

Then again, it was her sister, her second soul. Evangeline had always been her one and only. Deep down Gwen hoped one day she would open her eyes and look at her again. Her brain knew that would never happen, but her heart ached for Evangeline. Gwen was torturing herself, but she couldn’t help it, she loved Evangeline so deeply that she would give her own life if that meant Evangeline would be able to return.

A quiet knock on the door made her look up and quickly wipe her tears away. Stacy opened the door and stepped inside.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

Gwen sighed. “I’m sorry.”

Stacy came closer and sat next to her on the bed. “There is no need to feel sorry.”

“It’s just so hard sometimes.”

“I know, and all of us always have an open ear for you.”

“It’s so hard seeing her like this. Even eight years later it breaks me. I just want to shake her, beg her to wake up, and be the person I've known her to be.”

Stacy started to rub her back. “I can’t say I truly understand the struggle that you are going through. I just know that your feelings, your thoughts are natural, and I won’t judge you for them, no one here will.”

Gwen buried her face in her hands again. “I love her so much and I just want her to love me the same again.”

“Oh sweet Gwendoline, she does love you, so very much.”

That just broke Gwen’s heart into a thousand pieces. Of course Evangeline loved her, but Gwen just wanted her to be able to show it. She hated this whole situation, hated the man that had taken her sister from her, hated herself for being weak.

After a few more moments, Gwen straightened her shoulders and rubbed her eyes, taking deep breaths. “Thank you, Stacy.”

“You’re more than welcome.” She got up and smiled at her, like a mother would smile down at her child. “I packed you some cake that I was able to save from the hyenas.”

Gwen followed her out of the room to the dining area where Evangeline was already hooked up to her feeding tube. She gently leaned down to her sister and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“I’m not sure if I can come see you next week. Mr. Seavey is planning on leaving town with his brothers and I have to go with them.”

She gave her another kiss on the forehead before taking a plate with cake from Stacy and leaving.

The drive home was quite depressing as the clouds had darkened with heavy rain falling from the sky. Arriving home, she parked as close to her door as possible and ran inside. Stacy had packed far too much cake for Gwen alone to finish. She placed a few pieces on a plate and into the fridge. A little timid, she opened the door to the main house and walked down the hallway. The door to the office was open and she saw Rayen standing by the printer. She gently knocked without stepping inside.

He looked up, his eyes beaming at her as usual. “Gwendoline, how may I help you?”

“I just wanted to see if anyone wanted some cake. There was quite a lot left over.”

Seemingly amused, he stepped closer. “Of course. How about we find a tray for it in the kitchen so everyone can grab some whenever they like.”

She followed him down the side hallway to the main living and entrance area. He turned on the light in the kitchen and started to open the cabinets in search of a tray. She walked to the big island and set the cake on it, watching every move he made. He was casually dressed in dark jeans and a dark gray t-shirt. It was on the tighter end and hugged his broad shoulders gorgeously.

Unlike Silas, he didn’t seem to be the man that liked to work out, but he seemed naturally built that way. She couldn’t help but wonder how he would look naked. His stomach always seemed flat, but she assumed he didn’t have an actual sixpack. Either way it wouldn’t bother her. His figure was one of those that would make her feel protected. She wanted to feel his big arms wrap around her.

With a triumphant sound he turned around. “I knew we had one like this.” He’d found a glass cake tray with a matching lid. He came closer and sat it down in front of her. “Now we only need one of those cake thingies,” he said and started opening drawers.

She tried to hold back a giggle but couldn’t hide her amused smile. His cluelessness was adorable. He of course was a grown man, but it was sweet to watch him as he tried to find his way around the kitchen.

“I’m sorry Gwendoline, we don’t use this kitchen a lot.”

“It’s fine. A knife would do and maybe a fork?”

He nodded and gave her both. “Did your sister like the necklace? We weren’t sure if it was to her taste and of course we’ll exchange it if it’s not to her liking.”

Gwen sighed and swallowed down a wave of sadness. “It’s beautiful and definitely something she would’ve chosen herself.” She saw his confusion and added, “It’s a little complicated with her. She was in an accident eight years ago and since then she has been in a vegetative state. She doesn’t know what’s happening around her.”
