His eyes moved quickly over the letter, and he seemed a little more pleased. “I see. My employees work various shifts and times depending on need. The schedule will change frequently, depending on events and customer flow.”

“That isn’t a problem. I have no other obligations and can work any day, at any time.”

He nodded. “I have a few more interviews scheduled and will make my decision by Monday.”

“Thank you.”

A little disappointed she walked out of the office only to bump into a woman that seemed to be there for another interview. A lot of people were looking for jobs, which made it a gamble of luck to find one.

Gwen walked out into the fresh air and warm sunlight. Walking through the back streets, she made her way to the waterfall that hid behind the Galleria mall. It was a small park, and the sound of the water was relaxing and calming. She sat on a bench to change into her flats again and leaned her head back, letting the sun warm her face.

Houston was prettiest in the spring, when the Texas heat was mild and the sun wasn’t burning her skin. As a child she’d always hated the summer break. Not because she wanted to go back to school, but because the southern heat was so intense that it wasn’t fun to play outside and explore. Tears started to fill her eyes as memories of her childhood flooded her thoughts.

Her childhood had been a happy one. She was raised by a single mother with a twin sister by her side. Evangeline had been her anchor, her second half. They’d spent every second together, taken the same classes, had the same grades, and hobbies. They’d been inseparable, until everything changed the night they graduated high school. Evangeline had finally been asked out by her crush and Gwen had pushed her to go on a date with him. If she would’ve known that would be the last time they talked, Gwen never would’ve let her go.

Just as the memories of the accident crept up on her, her phone started to ring. She quickly opened her eyes and answered the phone.

“Gwen Moore speaking.”

“Ms. Moore, this is Claudia Ramos from Seavey Realty. I’m calling you regarding your job application.”

Gwen’s heart skipped a beat. She was unable to say a word.

“I’ve noticed you missed checking a box on your application form. Do you have a driver’s license?”

Gwen couldn’t remember seeing that question but quickly replied, “I do.”

“Perfect. Mr. Seavey would like to see you within the hour to discuss the details of your employment.”

“He does?”

“Yes, Ms. Moore. He is a very busy man and needs to see you within the hour.”

Her heart pounded against her chest. “Of course.”

“Thank you, Ms. Moore.”

The phone call ended and Gwen started sprinting towards the next bus stop. It would take her at least forty minutes to get downtown, that was if she was lucky enough to catch the next bus. She ran like she’d never run before, as if her life depended on getting on the next bus. Just as she crossed the street, the bus arrived at the stop about a hundred feet away from her. She pushed herself even harder, praying that the bus driver would see her and wait. He didn’t and seeing the bus drive off without her crushed her heart, shattering her hopes into a thousand pieces.

Panting and trying to catch her breath, she stopped running. The next bus would arrive in fifteen minutes but that was too late for her to make it in time. She pulled out her phone and ordered an Uber with the last thirty bucks she had to her name, hoping that it was enough to pay for it. She stared impatiently at her screen, watching the Uber driver come closer.

It took the Uber driver fifteen minutes to arrive. Fifteen minutes in which Gwen was praying nothing would go wrong and trying to calm her racing heart. As the black Subaru parked in front of her, she saw herself and the hot mess she was in her reflection. She opened the door, sat in the back and as they drove she quickly fixed her hair.

Traffic was horrible and it took them twenty minutes to get to their destination. She quickly made her way up the white marble stairs and entered the lobby. It seemed to be a busy morning, the lobby was filled with lots of businessmen dressed in black suits and women dressed in skirts with blazers. With her more casual looking outfit, she felt entirely under-dressed.

She tried to hide her embarrassment and hopped on the next available elevator to the sixty-fifth floor. With sweaty hands and her heart painfully pounding in her chest, she opened the frosted glass door and stepped into the office.

The lady behind the front desk smiled at her. “Wonderful Ms. Moore, Mr. Seavey is already waiting for you.” From her voice, Gwen recognized her as Claudia Ramos. “Please follow me.”

Gwen nodded and tried to casually smile back at her, which was much harder than it seemed. Her anxiety was sparking and igniting within her and only intensified her nervosity. She was afraid that Mr. Seavey would change his mind. After all, he hadn’t been impressed with her during the interview, and all the other candidates seemed much more experienced.

Claudia knocked on the massive wooden door at the end of the hallway and opened it. “Mr. Seavey, Ms. Moore just arrived.”

Claudia stepped aside and let Gwen enter before closing the door behind her. Mr. Seavey was sitting at his desk, looking just as handsome as she remembered. His suit was a light gray, his hair nicely trimmed and his eyes shining in the afternoon sun. For just a split second, she saw them flicker up and down her figure, but he didn’t change his stoic expression. She walked over to the desk and sat down on the chair opposite of him.
