Rayen chuckled. “Of course she wouldn’t, but I’d do anything to at least try. Maybe if I lock her up in a library, she will take a break.”

“Silas would’ve loved that. I think he secretly already started buying romance books.”

“I’m not sure if he’ll forgive us.”

“He’ll forgive you, not me. I brought her to him, and now that he’s warming up to her, I’m ripping her away.”

“I’ll always hate you for it.”

They both looked up and saw Silas step in. His face was hard, a dark shadow laying over it.

“When will she be leaving?”

“I’ll be telling her tonight when she comes home that we’ll be moving back to L.A. without her. I’ve arranged for her to pick and choose from multiple employers, so she is taken care of and she’ll be paid a good amount for her relocation too.”

“You’re paying her off like she’s some kind of whore.” Silas turned and left.

Rayen sighed and got up too. “At least let us all be there.”

Amon nodded and watched him leave the library. Unable to move, he was stuck in the same position for hours. It was only when the sun was setting for the late afternoon that he was able to move again. Gwendoline was going to be home soon, and he wanted to send her a message to meet him in his office.

He sat in his office with all the papers sitting in front of him, listening as her car parked in the driveway. Rayen and Silas joined him just as she opened the door in the hallway and came closer. Before stepping through the office doors, he heard her take a deep breath, probably mentally preparing herself for his vicious behavior from the past three days.

Her peachy scent wrapped around him as she stepped in, letting his heart longingly burn up. It was hard to keep his straight face and not jolt towards her. All he wanted was to fall on his knees before her and beg for her forgiveness.

She’d put a smile on her face, though it seemed forced especially when her gaze met his.

“Sit, Ms. Moore.”

She timidly stepped closer and sat on the chair next to Rayen.

“We’ve decided to locate back to Los Angeles. The office here is doing far better than we’d expected and we are much more needed in our other offices.”

She took a moment to realize what that meant for her, and when she did all color faded from her face. Pure terror settled in. Her heart now racing even more, pounded against her chest as panic rose within her.

Rayen was eager to ease her fear. “Gwendoline, please don’t worry.” He quickly reached for the stack of papers on the desk. “We’ve made sure to find some very suitable employers for you who are eager to hire you. All you need to do is call whomever you desire.”

Her heart slowed down, her breathing becoming less frantic. “I still have a job?”

“Not with us, but all of these…” Rayen handed her the list of suitable employers, “are available to you. You can pick and choose from all of them.”

Her hands were shaking as she took the list from him and looked down on it. “Any of them?”

“Yes, Gwendoline. They all want you and all you have to do is call them.”

She nodded, her heartbeat slowing. “When will you be leaving?”

“Next week.”

That set her in slight panic again, small tears forming on her eyes, though she was too proud to ever let them fall down her cheeks.

“Ms. Moore, we understand what kind of inconvenience this is to you.” Amon pushed more papers towards her. “We’ll be compensating you for your move and the search for a new apartment. We’ve also written a letter of resignation for you.”

She picked up the letter and carefully read it. He’d typed it up, saying she would be leaving because of personal reasons. Her eyes widened as she looked over the paper with her relocation compensation, her heart skipping what he hoped was a happy beat.

“It doesn’t say when my last day is?”

“We’ll pay you for another two weeks, though we don’t expect you to work those two weeks. You may relocate and start your new job at any time starting today. The car will be yours to use for those two weeks too.”
