Rayen leaned even closer to her while Silas stood in the corner, fighting back his rage. “Just give the key to Ms. Ramos whenever you’re ready.”

She nodded and leaned towards the desk taking one of the pens to sign her letter of resignation. “Is there anything else I need to do?”

Rayen gave her a smile though it wasn’t as bright as usual. “No, unless you need anything from us?”

She shook her head.

“Gwendoline, please know that there was nothing wrong with your work. You did a fantastic job.”

She took a deep breath, her eyes dangerously close to spilling those tears and smiled. “Thank you.”

She quickly got up and walked out of the office, the papers clenched to her chest. Before she could close the door behind her Amon could smell salt in the air. Her tears had spilled, though she hid them, careful not to turn her face to them as she closed the door. He heard her muffled sobs as she walked to her apartment.

“Fuck you both for doing this to her.”

“Silas…” Rayen tried to calm him, but he didn’t have any of it.

“I’ll never forgive either of you.”

As soon as the door of her apartment closed, her legs gave out. She wasn’t sure if it was from relief, anger, or just sadness. She dropped on the couch and leaned her head back, her tears still running down her cheeks. She’d expected anything but this. She’d barely worked a month and now she was being let go, yet again.

Even though Rayen had said it didn’t have anything to do with her, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was at fault. Maybe she’d gotten too friendly, too personal with them. Gwen had only done so because of Rayen and then Silas’s openness. Perhaps she should’ve been more professional.

Wiping away her tears, she looked down at the papers in her hand and read the first job offer. It was for another real estate agency closer to Pearland. Same salary, less hours and more like a secretary position. All of them were amazing job offers, but none of them was like this one.

She would miss them, all three of them. Though she would only miss Amon’s personality pre-Los Angeles. She’d slowly warmed up to them and they seemed to have warmed up to her. She sighed and looked around the room, sad that she had to leave her little apartment.

She set the papers aside and walked to the closet where she changed into something more comfortable. Feeling completely drained and unmotivated, she decided to get take-out for dinner. Her evening entertainment was looking at all the employers the brothers had provided for her.

It was bittersweet of them to organize a new job for her. Sweet because they seemed to care enough for her not to throw her out on the street and leave her with nothing. And bitter because that meant they must have known about this for at least a few days.

She decided to go with a law firm that was located close to downtown. It would give her access to a job with all the bus lines close, no matter where she would find an apartment. It wouldn’t be easy to find something with the little time she had, but at least their moving allowance gave her more than enough money for a deposit.

She stayed up close to midnight, searching through websites and writing down a list of places she wanted to call tomorrow. She curled up in bed with a pillow stuffed between her legs and hugging a second to her chest. As she laid there, she couldn’t help but already miss the place. Yes, the past week was hell, but the weekend had been sweet. At least, everything but Amon’s behavior.

It was easier calling him by his first name now that he wasn’t really her boss anymore. Silas and Rayen had been cute and sweet in their own way, especially for making her that picnic basket. She’d enjoyed talking to them even though it hadn’t been much.

Silent tears dropped to her cheeks as she closed her eyes and revisited the plane ride and the talk on the terrace overlooking Los Angeles. Her dreams painted and created more conversations she would’ve loved to have with them. Even Amon joined in, his personality much softer than what she’d seen in real life.

Since she’d forgotten to turn it off the evening before, her alarm clock woke her up the next morning. She sighed and tossed in her bed wanting to go back to sleep, though she was unable to do so. After a thirty-minute fight, she gave up and climbed out of bed.

Since she wasn’t expected to work any more, she chose her clothes freely and without worrying about pleasing anyone but herself. High waisted jeans and a flowery fluffy blouse with sandals made her happy, so that’s what she chose to wear.

Not wanting to have wasted her last day of work, she printed out the schedules she’d made for the week ahead and knocked on Amon’s door. He seemed surprised to see her, his eyes showed a flicker of worry before hardening again. Stepping in front of the desk, she laid down the to-do-lists and the week’s overviews.

“There is no need for this, Ms. Moore.”

She shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly. “I didn’t want all the work I put into these to go to waste.”

His lips slightly twitched and she noticed that he seemed much more relaxed now. “Of course not.”

“I was also wondering to whom I should let everyone forward their emails.”
