“We will set it up so that everything is automatically forwarded to the L.A. office.”

“Good. I’ll clear up the laptop and phone and bring it to you later.”

“No need.”

She crooked her eyebrow feeling much freer around him now. She wasn’t quite sure what he meant.

“Keep it.”

“Oh… Okay. Thank you,” she said, her cheeks feeling hot again. “Well, if there is anything else we need to organize just let me know.”

“Of course.”

She wanted to thank him for everything, but then remembered how badly he’d treated her the past few days and decided against it. It was childish, but not thanking him was somewhat of a punishment even though he didn’t know of it. Without another word, she turned and left.

She started to call leasing offices throughout the morning and headed out after lunch. She didn’t really care about the area as long as it wasn’t too expensive and had the Metro nearby. She looked at a few studio apartments just outside the inner loop and liked them all. One of them even had one available right away, so she filled out an application.

When she’d taken the job with the Seaveys she’d hoped to keep it for at least a year or two. She’d switched jobs so often that she grew tired of having to start all over again and again. A numb feeling spread within her, not letting her feel all the emotion she should or could.

Of course, she felt grateful to have a lot of job opportunities lined up, but it just meant she had to relearn everything again. Each employer had different rules to follow, different behaviors they wanted everyone to show. It meant introducing herself to new people yet again and making new connections.

Sunday was no different from Saturday, though she went to visit Evangeline in the late afternoon. Not feeling well anyway, this visit only worsened her mood. By the time she drove home her mind was flooded with dark thoughts of her past. She missed Evangeline and couldn’t help but think that her life would’ve been much better with her.

Rage erupted from deep down for the man who’d taken her soul from her. She remembered how he’d stood before the judge trying to apologize for the unforgivable. He’d turned to Gwen and her mother, but Gwen just hadn’t been able to listen to him and had left the courtroom.

Clenching the steering wheel, her eyes blurred in anger. She wanted to see him dead, or even better let him suffer as much as she and Evangeline were suffering. Taking deep calming breaths, she parked in front of the mansion. She took a moment before stepping out and into her apartment.

On Monday, she talked to the law firm and accepted their position. After that she heard back from one of the leasing offices and deposited the move-in fee. In the afternoon she started packing and preparing for her move on Wednesday. She didn’t see nor hear anything from any of the brothers which she was sad and glad about at the same time. She was still hurt by Amon’s actions and how he’d treated her. On top of that, she felt like a failure who hadn’t even been able to keep the job for a month.

Wednesday morning, she opened the trunk of the car and started loading up her belongings. As she was just setting down the third box, she heard someone open the front door and come closer. Looking up she saw Rayen, his face friendly as always, but also slightly upset.

“You’re leaving us already?”

“Yes.”

“Do you need help?”

“No.” Part of her wanted to talk to him, the other just felt humiliated for being fired not even a month into her assignment.

“We are sorry, Gwendoline.”

He truly seemed sorry but that didn’t make her feel any better, so she simply shrugged her shoulders and turned to her door. She grabbed another box and walked back to the car just as Silas walked up behind Rayen.

“Why aren’t you helping her?” he asked accusingly, glaring at Rayen as if he was his worst enemy.

“She doesn’t want my help.”

Silas ignored him and followed Gwen back inside where she was trying to hide from their bickering.

Silas pointed at the couch. “Sit.”

“What?”

“Sit.”

He’d always seemed to be the demanding one but never like this. His eyes dark, his face hard, he looked down at her waiting for her to obey him. She looked up at him trying to see how serious he was and decided she didn’t want to mess with him right now. Following his command, she sat on the couch and watched as he grabbed two boxes at the same time. Rayen came back in with him and looked around.

“Where is your other stuff?” Silas asked.
