He chuckled and she directed him towards Chick-fil-A.

“Why do you call me little bird?”

“I just feel it’s fitting. You’re like a little bird just learning how to fly.”

“I feel like I’m drowning though.”

“We’ll never let that happen.”

She turned and looked out the window, trying to hide her emotions. They’d made her feel like she was drowning just a week or so ago. Of course, they’d made sure she had a job and all, but still it had felt as if she’d been dropped in a heartbeat and without care for her feelings. She didn’t say much more after that, only assisting him with the drive-throughs and telling him her order. He didn’t push her or anything, but she could feel his worried gaze on her.

He parked right by the front door and sped around the car in his lightning speed to help her out. He carried her food inside and led her to the kitchen where he placed everything on the breakfast table. With her stomach hurting and growling at her she quickly sat down and pulled out her fries and ice cream.

Rayen sat next to her, and Silas joined too, sitting opposite of her with a glass of wine in his hand. She stared at it for a moment, and only then noticed its thickness and dark color. Realization hit her like a lightning bolt.

“That’s not wine, is it?”

Grinning, Silas shook his head.

“How could I have missed that?”

Rayen chuckled quietly. “What do you think of when you hear hooves?”

She sighed. “Horses, but it could also be zebras.”

“Exactly. You didn’t suspect anything, so you didn’t look for anything either.”

“So, you’re not really brothers?”

They both shook their heads.

“I thought so, but I was thinking of adoption, or different mothers and fathers.”

“We adopted each other,” Rayen said and leaned back.

She had so many more questions, but her mind wasn’t ready for more information. She just stared at her food and silently ate, picking at everything she enjoyed without finishing any of it.

Eventually, her stomach wasn’t growling anymore so she packed up the leftovers and looked up. “Do you mind if I just leave this here for tomorrow?”

Rayen took the bags. “Of course not. Are you going to sleep now?”

She shrugged her shoulders and got up. “I’ll try.”

“We’re here if you need us, little bird.”

“Yeah, no need for sleep and so on,” she said and waved without looking at them.

Upstairs she found her bag on the bed, together with a charger for her phone and a glass of water on the nightstand. In the bathroom someone had cleaned up her bloody clothes. She assumed that Silas had burned them too. She curled up in bed and used one of the many pillows in the bed to cuddle with.

Sixteen

Gwen tossed and turned the rest of the night. Sometime in the early morning, she stopped trying to find her way back to sleep. She kept feeling the touches of those horrible men. Even worse, in some of the dreams she wasn’t rescued by Silas. She knew they were only dreams, but that didn’t help her get any rest.

By six in the morning, she got up and walked downstairs. She still didn’t feel comfortable walking around their home so casually. She expected Amon to pop out at any minute, his judging eyes on her. She walked into the kitchen where she heated up the leftover burger in the microwave.

“I thought you would sleep longer.”
