“What?”

“You shouldn’t be living like that.”

“In a small apartment?”

“You deserve better.”

“I don’t mind it, it’s a cute apartment.”

“I think Silas just likes to spoil you, little bird. Would you like to go by it today and pick up a few things?”

“We’ll pack up everything. She is not going back there.”

“Silas.” Amon had a warning tone. “She may decide when she is ready for that.”

“She won’t go back there. What’s the point in keeping her belongings away from her?” Silas seemed ready to fight. She felt his muscles tense next to her, his chest filled with a deep, thunderous rumble.

“Maybe she wants to keep it, it’s the place she chose to live,” Rayen added softly, trying to defuse the situation.

“She already said she’ll stay with us, so there is no need for it.”

Though she’d said she would stay, she didn’t feel comfortable giving up the apartment. Deep down, she didn’t think this would last longer than her last stay at their mansion. She leaned away from him and looked at Rayen.

“I would love to get a few things to keep here.”

“Of course. Whenever you are ready, we can go pick them up.”

“How about now?”

Rayen nodded but Silas growled. “Why not everything?”

“Because I still like making my own decisions.”

“And we’ll make sure you always can.” Amon directed his words more to Silas than to her.

“I’m coming with you though.” Silas stood up and held a hand out to her and helped her on her feet.

“Would you like to go and fill up the fridge too? I’ve never been into a modern food store,” Rayen asked excitedly.

She crooked her eyebrow. “So you never even went out of curiosity?”

He shook his head and she giggled.

“Well, we should make that happen then.” Turning her attention to Amon, she asked, “Are you coming too?”

“If that is what you wish.” Amon stood up though he didn’t seem happy.

“Only come if you want to.”

He stood frozen, his gaze fixed on her. She could see the wheels turning in his head, as if he was fighting with himself. After a moment, he relaxed slightly.

“I would like to come.”

“Let me get my bag.” She turned, surprised to see Silas holding it already. “Oh, thanks.”

Amon drove while Rayen took the passenger seat and she and Silas sat in the back. It was a quiet ride, though it felt much more relaxed than the car rides she remembered. Amon followed her directions and parked close to her apartment complex.

Silas looked around, not approving of any of it. “Why would you live in such a neighborhood?”
