“Thank you.”

She took Silas’s hand in hers and followed Rayen and Amon outside.Silas held on to her, weaving his fingers with hers and gently running his thumb over the back of her hand.

“I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable with how I acted. I just want you safe with us. I hated seeing you in that alley and nearly lost my mind after we sent you away.”

“I didn’t think any of you cared so much for me.”

Amon slowed his pace and started walking next to her, the back of his hand briefly touching hers. “We care greatly for you. I thought you would be safer far away from us. I thought you would want a normal life, and I was afraid to share what we are with you. Protecting our secret is crucial for our survival.”

“I wouldn’t tell anyone.”

“We trust you, little bird.”

“I knew you wouldn’t share it. I was scared of your rejection. We may be able to give you money and possessions, but never a normal life.”

Silas held on even tighter to her, almost as if he was afraid she would run away. “Please don’t leave us because of it.”

Rayen held the car door open for her and Silas helped her inside, not that she needed it, but he seemed to like it. On the way back her exhaustion caught up to her. Leaning her head against the window, she dozed off, still holding Silas’s hand.

She only woke up when Rayen’s soft voice called for her, “Little bird?”

Silas gently squeezed her hand, and she opened her eyes.

“Yes?”

“Would you rather go home and rest?”

“No.”

“Which store do you want to stop at?”

“I think Kroger would be a good start for you. Unless you want a little more of an adventure and go to Walmart?”

“I like adventure,” Silas said eagerly.

“Does that store have all you will need?”

“All I need and more,” she giggled.

She gave Amon instructions and a few minutes later he parked in front of the huge store.

“I can’t believe none of you have been here. But then again, this is probably not your type of store,” she said laughing.

Rayen walked in next to her. “Should we get one of those shopping baskets?”

Amon quickly grabbed one and pushed the cart behind them as they walked inside. Rayen curiously looked around. “Where do we start?”

“Nonfood items maybe. I need shampoo and soap.”

Rayen quickly read the signs along the aisles. “That way it seems.”

“I’ve never seen a store that sells so much stuff,” Silas said, seeming to debate whether he loved it or hated it.

“So where do you get all the things you need from?”

“Amon has everything we need delivered.”

“So, you never go out?”
