“Yes.”

“So are the names you’re using your real ones?”

“We just change our last names and often our relations. We haven’t lied to you about that, just the last names,” Rayen quickly chimed in.

“I didn’t want to imply you were lying, just wanted to make sure I call you by your real names.” She leaned back and yawned, before looking at Silas. “Will you read more to me?”

“Of course.”

“Let me clean up and change into something comfy first.”

“Don’t worry about the dishes, I’ll do them,” Rayen offered.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I know, little bird. I want to.”

“Thank you.” She quickly got up and walked towards the stairs.

“I’ll be waiting in the library.”

A few minutes later she stepped into the library dressed in her pajamas and holding a blanket in her hands. Silas was waiting on the couch for her, while Rayen was pouring a glass with blood out of a plastic I.V. bag. Amon stood by the windows and looked at her as she came in. Somehow, she still expected him to disagree with her choice of clothing.

As if he’d read her mind he said, “This is your home, Gwendoline. You may dress however you please.”

She nodded and quickly walked over to Silas. He lifted his hands from his lap. “Lay down.” There it was again, his dominant side.

She obeyed because that was exactly what she wanted. With her head in his lap, she curled up on the couch. He made sure the blanket fully covered her before starting to read. She closed her eyes and sank into the world he described to her, his husky voice being everything she cared about in the moment.

At some point, the world he was building with his words faded into her dreams. She sank deeper and deeper, though this time they weren’t dark. Even when cool large arms wrapped around her and carried her, she didn’t fully wake up.

He watched as Gwen fell asleep on Silas’s lap, soothed by his voice. She hadn’t slept much the night before or rested much throughout the day, so it was no surprise that she fell asleep so quickly. Though he knew she’d fallen asleep, Silas kept reading. He didn’t want to wake her up.

After another twenty minutes, Silas’s voice slowly faded without Gwen waking up. Silas set the book aside and started to run his fingers through her hair. Amon was the first to move as he slowly approached the couch and ran his fingers over her cheek, before disappearing. Silas and Rayen exchanged a look. They didn’t have to say a word, they both knew how desperately Amon wanted to be close to her, though he was still fighting the vow he’d given his wife.

Rayen stepped closer and looked down at his little bird. She looked so peaceful, her sleep much calmer than the night before. He’d listened to her tossing and turning, wanting to soothe her but too afraid to invade her privacy.

“We should put her to bed and let her get some rest.”

Silas’s face hardened, not wanting to let her go.

“If she needs us, she’ll call for us, but the bed is more comfortable than this couch.”

Silas still wasn’t pleased about it but nodded. Rayen gently and carefully pushed his arms beneath her warm body and picked her up. Deeply asleep, she curled into his chest, her heart beating calmly. Her peachy rose scent was even more intense now that she was pressed against his body.

Silas was waiting by her bed, the covers already pulled back so they could tuck her in. She slightly moaned when he laid her down as if she wanted to protest but didn’t wake up. Silas ran his fingers over her nose and kissed her forehead before leaving.

Rayen leaned down and whispered against her ear, “Sleep well, little bird.”

He closed the door behind him, wanting her to know that her privacy was still important to them. Silas was back in the library, pouring himself a drink.

“She likes your voice, as soon as you started reading, she was out.”
