“He was rude in the first place.”

“He was honest.”

“That doesn’t mean he should’ve said what he did. Just talk to him, I’m sure he’s already pacing the house impatiently waiting for you to return.”

She laughed shyly as she pictured Silas. “So, you don’t mind me…Well… spending time with him?”

“Silas?”

She nodded.

“No, not at all, little bird. Not even if you would like to spend some time with Amon.”

“I don’t think he wants that.”

“He does, but he doesn’t know how to let anyone close to him. He needs time to adjust. He wants you close and wants to be with you, he just doesn’t know how.”

“And Silas isn’t upset if I spent time with either of you?”

“No. He is a little possessive, but not because he doesn’t like you with us. He wants to keep you safe, and he knows that with us you are.”

“I noticed that kind of when he ripped that man’s heart out.”

“He would never hurt you.”

“I know, I trust him. All of you for that matter.” Smiling at him, she held out her hand and he took it, interweaving his fingers with hers.

As soon as they parked, Silas dashed out of the house, just like Rayen had predicted. He hesitated and stopped halfway to the car, as if he was afraid to anger her again. She walked up to him and wrapped her arms around his lean waist. At first he was stiff, but he then relaxed and laid his arms around her shoulders, pulling her closer to him.

Rayen chuckled as he walked by. “I told you so.”

“Told her what?”

Gwen loosened her grip enough for her to look up at him. “He said you’d be pacing back and forth in the house waiting for me to come back.”

“I was. I didn’t mean to upset you,” he mumbled full of regret.

“I know, it’s just complicated.”

“I don’t like how it upsets you, that’s all.”

“It would upset me just as much if I didn’t go see her.”

He nodded. “Have you had lunch yet?”

“No.”

They walked into the kitchen where she made herself a sandwich and poured a glass with orange juice. Silas was leaning against the counter next to her while Rayen sat at the table. They always seemed to be close, whereas Amon liked to keep his distance.

After lunch she walked to the sink and added her plate.

“Is there anything you would like to do this afternoon?” Rayen asked curiously for what was to come next.
