“So, we just watch her suffer?”

“We’ll be by her side, comfort and console her. She has suffered so much because she was alone, crushed under all her burdens. With us, she’ll be able to heal.”

Without another word, Amon stepped past Rayen and walked downstairs. As he grabbed his keys, Gwendoline walked out of the kitchen, her bag in one hand and her breakfast in the other.

“I’m here,” she said quickly, coming closer.

“No need to rush.”

He watched as Silas pulled her into a kiss, grabbing her by the back of her neck. She seemed to like his dominant behavior, which intimidated Amon. He wasn’t anything like Silas and wasn’t sure if he could please her as much as Silas or Rayen did.

Rayen joined and wrapped his arms around her burying her into his chest. “Don’t work too long, little bird. We’re already anxiously waiting for your return.”

“Don’t lose too much money, because you’re bored, okay?”

Rayen started laughing, kissed her forehead, and pushed her towards Amon. He held the door open for her to step outside and followed her to the car. Without Rayen around, he helped her into her seat.

“Where am I taking you?”

“Oh, I thought you knew because Silas knew too. Downtown.”

“The law firm?”

“Yes.”

“What time would you like me to pick you up?”

“I usually get off at six.” She finished her breakfast and curiously eyed him. “Why did you hire me?”

“Rayen and Silas asked me this many times.”

“I mean I’m grateful you did, but you seemed to hate me.”

“I never hated you.”

“You were so cold though.”

“Only because I didn’t want to get too close to you.”

“You hurt me.”

“I wish I could go back and change it.” He wanted to touch her, hold her hand, feel her skin.

“I mean I understand why you did it, but it hurt. I thought I’d done something wrong. Even before the trip to L.A. I never knew if I was doing everything to your liking.”

“You always exceeded my expectations.”

Her eyes started sparkling, her cheeks turning a rosy pink.

“You did a wonderful job, Gwendoline. My distance wasn’t because I disliked what you were doing. When you stepped into my office, I knew you were special. But I also knew my attraction towards you would only put us both in danger. I resisted you and sent you away because if I’d talked to you more, I wouldn’t have been able to resist you. You broke down my resilience when I saw you waiting for your bus. You looked battered, as if life was crushing you. I made a promise to myself right then and there to take care of you from afar.”

Her face had turned a bright shameful red. “I was praying you wouldn’t see me.” Fidgeting with her blouse she looked into her lap. “The day before I met you, I was served my eviction notice because I was behind on rent. I used the last of my money to buy an Uber to get to you on time to take the job. I had nothing when I met you. I always worked hard–I was never lazy, but life just kept throwing boulders at me.” She looked up with tears in her eyes. “You saved me, you know? I would’ve been homeless if you hadn’t offered me to live with you.”

“You’ll forever be taken care of, Gwendoline. Even if one day you decide to leave us, I promise you, we’ll give you a comfortable life.”

“I appreciate it, but it feels like I’m cheating.”

“You have worked so well and hard, that this is now your reward. You never have to worry about money again.”
