“What do you usually do?”

Rayen laughed behind them. “We all know the answer to that. Eat and work some more.”

“Maybe Amon can start teaching me how to paint?”

Amon’s eyes started beaming, seemingly loving the idea.

By the time she’d prepared and ate a meal, Amon had already set up everything for his lesson on the porch. Silas followed her outside with a glass in his hands while Rayen was in the wine cellar choosing one for her.

Sitting down, Silas watched as Gwen stepped closer to the table that Amon had set up. She seemed curious but timid.

“Where do we start?”

Amon handed her a sketch book and a few pencils. “Find a flower or plant maybe, even just a leaf that you enjoy looking at.”

She took the pencils and book and looked around. “Anything?”

“It has to catch your eye. You’ll have to stare at it for quite some time, so it has to be something you deem pretty.”

She bit her lip and turned towards the garden, scanning everything in sight. She took her time choosing before a bright smile spread on her face.

“Have you found something?”

She nodded.

“Sit down next to it and study it. Try to see all the details. When you are ready, start with its outline and remember that just because you draw a line it is never set in stone.” He handed her an eraser that she gladly took.

“You won’t draw it with me?”

“This is for you to find your muse. Even Picasso had to start somewhere.”

Still timid, she walked towards a few flowers in the midst of the garden. She sat in front of them on the grass and placed the pencils next to her with the sketch book on her lap. She took Amon’s advice and studied a daisy for a few minutes before placing the first stroke on the paper.

Not wanting to disturb her, Rayen set the glass of wine on the table and sat next to Silas. “Who thought this would be us a few weeks ago.”

“You idiots nearly destroyed this.”

“You’ll forever hold it against us, won’t you?” Rayen didn’t seem upset, rather amused.

“Fuck yes.”

Amon stayed out of it, though he sat down with them. Like Gwen, he held a sketch book and started drawing. His eyes on Gwen, his fingers moved quickly and nimbled over the paper as he studied her closely. Silas leaned closer and saw that he was drawing her sitting on the grass with her sketch book in hand.

After a while she turned her head towards them. “Amon?”

He was by her side within a moment.

“It looks like a preschooler drew this.”

He kneeled next to her with a gentle look on his face. “Look at it and tell me what you don’t like about it.”

“Everything.”

His smile turned brighter. “Pick out a detail that bothers you.”

She started pointing her finger at the details she hated. Amon encouraged her and showed her how to improve what she didn’t like.

Silas had never seen this side of Amon. Of course, he’d seen him paint before, but never this content or gentle. Amon had always been a distant soul, a man of few words. Gwen too had changed in the past few days. She was far more open and relaxed, even around Amon. She talked more freely, showed her affections and feelings without hesitation, and dressed in whatever she felt comfortable.
