“I would love to.”

Although traffic was dense, the drive was over far too soon. As he stopped the car before her office, she leaned over to him and kissed his cheek. “I’ll see you later.”

“I can’t wait.”

His day was monotonous. Without Gwendoline in the office, his work felt like a chore. They hadn’t found a replacement for her, nor did he want someone, so he answered most of his emails and all calls that came in. The lesser important ones he transferred to his staff to take care of.

His day lightened when Gwendoline’s number popped up on the screen as an incoming call.

“Gwendoline.”

“Mhm…” she giggled, her tone slightly mischievous. “I thought you’re in the office, aren’t you supposed to call me Ms. Moore?”

His lips twitched into a smile. “How may I help you?”

“How about you pick me up in an hour? Only if that works for you of course.”

“As I said nothing is more important than you.”

“Well, I’m glad you can’t see my face right now.”

“I’ll see it in an hour.”

“By then my cheeks will look normal again.”

She hung up before he could say another word.

An hour later, he parked in front of her office and quickly got out of the car as Gwendoline came closer. Her annoyed face lit up as soon as she laid eyes on him. Before he could help her into the car, she got on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek, her warm, soft lips feeling as if a cloud touched his skin.

“You seem upset,” he noted, taking her hand in his and helping her to sit.

She shrugged her shoulders. “Just work.”

As he drove off, he studied her closer. “If you like, I can help you find a different company to work for.”

She looked at him, chewing on her bottom lip. “Silas said something last night that stuck with me. He suggested I work for you again.”

If he’d had a heart it would’ve sped up… or maybe skipped a beat. He couldn’t remember what his heart used to do when he was excited. “Is that something you would like to do?”

“I’m not sure.”

“What about it makes you uncomfortable?”

“The autonomy maybe?”

“You would feel as if your whole life relied on us. As if you had to stay with us even if you didn’t want to because of the money.”

“Yes.”

“How about we write a contract? We will pay you a good bonus to return to us and you can use that as a lifeline in case you want to leave. The contract would also state that you can leave within a moment’s notice without reason. It would give you stability and safety of being able to leave us at any time. You still have your apartment and all the money you earn from us you can keep. We’ll continue providing for you as you live with us, so all you have to worry about is your apartment.”

With each word, her face softened, and her eyes twinkled. “You would do that?”

“Of course. I’ll have a contract ready by tomorrow evening and you can read through it and make any changes you want.”

She reached for his hand and lifted it to her lips, pressing them on his knuckles. “Thank you.”

“You can work from home if you like. There’s no need to go to the office for meetings.”
