Shock slammed into me like a hellbent MMA wrestler, and my mouth gaped. “Tim? Do you have anything confirming this, or is it a hunch you’re following?”

“Both. If he didn’t kill her, then we suspect that he knows who did,” Michelle explained.

The shit just kept rolling downhill. “I guess you’re hoping that my working for him will solve multiple problems.”

“That’s the idea, at least,” Brian added.

“What’s the first step?” I listened intently while Brian explained the plan and the backup I’d have. Instead of wearing a tap, I’d have a device on my phone that would record everything between Tim and me. All I had to do was press the button located on the side of my cell. To Tim, it would appear as though I were putting my cell to sleep instead of activating the device.

“I think it would make sense if I called and told him that I wouldn’t be able to rebuild the club fast enough and need money now. Since the insurance will take a while to pay out, I figured this would be the easiest conversation to stick to. It’s all true except that I don’t want to work with him. In my mind, the fewer lies I have to tell, the better chance I have of pulling this off.”

“Exactly. I’ll help you keep everything straight,” Pierce added, taking a sip of his coffee.

I nodded, relieved to have Pierce guiding me along as well.

“When should I call Tim?” I asked.

“We were thinking right now. Put your phone on speaker,” Brian said.

I inhaled deeply as my heart thundered in my chest. I hoped like hell this would work. I removed my phone from my back pocket and pulled up Tim’s number. I glanced at Pierce, and he nodded.

Jace patted me on the back. “You’ve got this, man.”

Once Jace had processed through my decision to work for Tim, he’d come to terms with it, and had been supportive.

I tapped the screen, and his phone rang through my speaker.

“Son,” Tim answered.

I couldn’t dial in his tone yet. Was he surprised that I called, or was he expecting it?

“Are you in town?” I asked, knowing full well that he was in Oregon.

“No, but I’ll be back late tonight.”

“Okay. Um … I’ve been thinking about your offer. The club is going to take a long time to rebuild, and I need money now.”

Tim chuckled, and I could picture a cocky sneer on his face. The same expression I wanted to punch until he was unrecognizable.

“I knew you’d come around once you understood the insurance process. Tell you what, I’ll cover the entire cost of the club being rebuilt if you join me.”

I cringed. No way in hell did I want his dirty fucking money tied to my club. “Well, it was your fault, so I’ll accept. It will allow me to get on my feet financially.” I already was, but he didn’t know that. I had never shared my finances with my parents. I was grown, and it wasn’t any of their business.

“It’s the least I can do since I was behind it in the first place,” he said, a smile in his voice.

The sorry bastard found the situation entertaining.

“When can I start?” I wanted to move this along as quickly as possible.

“Let’s have an early lunch at Riverfront Park. We’ll be able to talk openly there,” Tim said.

“What time?” I massaged my aching neck, once again wishing this nightmare was already over.

“Let’s meet at ten in the morning. I have a busy day ahead of me,” Tim explained.

“Sounds like a plan.” I was ready to end the call when he asked the question I’d hoped to avoid.

“And Holden? Are you planning on leaving River alone?” His tone was no-nonsense. He wasn’t fucking with me.
