“Hey, guys. How’s it going there?”

“Good. We haven’t destroyed your house yet.” Jace grinned, trying to lighten an intense situation. “How are you and Brynn?”

Chance angled his iPhone and brought Brynn into view.

“Hey,” she offered us a brave smile and waved. “I miss you guys.”

“We miss you, too,” I said. “How are you feeling?”

“Better than yesterday, that’s for sure.” She laid a hand on her much smaller stomach. “I start chemo tomorrow. They have an entire cancer treatment wing here with the best specialists in the country. Try not to worry as much. I’m in good hands.”

I paused, scrambling for the right thing to say. “You’re going to beat this, Brynn.” I clutched the cell tighter than necessary, but I meant it. She was coming home. Both of our girls were.

“Any update on River?” Her voice held a hint of hope.

Jace pointed at me. “Nope, but he’s got a new little sister.”

I rolled my eyes. “Thanks, asshole.”

“What?” Brynn asked as she sat up in bed a little straighter.

“Her name is Waverly. Tim and his girlfriend, Autumn …” I blew out a sigh. “They’ve been off and on for several years. I’m hoping to meet her soon.”

“Oh, Holden, this could be a really good thing. Do you have pictures of her? How old is she?”

It was a relief to see color in Brynn’s cheeks and hear her sounding more like herself. “No, but I’ll see if Sutton found some online. I think she’s probably around five years old. Blonde hair and big blue eyes. She’s a doll.” And one that deserved to be protected from her family at all costs.

“She sounds adorable. I can’t wait to learn more. Might be fun to have a little one running around. I’m pretty sure we would all spoil her rotten.”

I loved Brynn’s enthusiasm, but I wasn’t so sure Waverly’s parents would allow us anywhere near her.

Brynn leaned her head back on the pillow, and Chance crawled into bed beside her so we could all see each other better.

“So …” I rubbed my chin, a mischievous smile easing across my face. “I hooked Zayne up with a hotel room and a few ladies. Dude needed to blow off some steam.”

Brynn giggled. “If only I was there.” She wiggled her eyebrows at us.

“Maybe something to look forward to after you’re all better. He seems like he might be up for the idea at least.”

Brynn frowned. “I’m lost. You talked to Zayne about me?” Her voice held a note of warning.

“He asked how you were doing. One thing led to another, then he asked about membership to the club once it was rebuilt.”

Brynn bit her lip. “Like the lower floor membership?”

“Yeah. He said now that his buddies are engaged or married, it’s been difficult to go out and have some fun by himself. I told him as soon as things were back in business, I’d let him know.”

“Oh, this could be fun.” Brynn grinned, then peeked at Chance, her smile faltering.

Jace discreetly nudged me. He’d noticed Chance’s change in expression as well. Most of the time, we all discussed the club and who we wanted to fuck, but our lives were changing. I suspected Brynn was attempting to hold onto anything that helped and gave her a bit of hope. She needed something to hold onto … we all did.

Brynn took Chance’s hand in hers and squeezed it.

“Brynn’s chemo is scheduled for nine in the morning,” Chance said.

My stomach clenched as a dark cloud hovered over our conversation again.

“Will you check in once she’s done? Let us know how it’s going?” I asked Chance.
