Questions spun in a million directions as I scrambled to put the pieces together. Even though Pierce and the FBI suspected Laura, it could still be a dead end. No one was sure that we were even on the right path.

I rubbed my eyes, trying to connect the dots between my nightmares and Laura.

“I can literally see the wheels turning in your head,” Jace said, glancing up from his mother’s notes.

“You can probably hear them, too.” I sat up. “I’m just trying to see how Laura fits into my nightmares. Or does she?”

“I think we have to look at the common thread. Sex trafficking. If Laura does have River, then I’m pretty sure the goal is to either sell her or make her a sex slave.”

I winced. “You didn’t have to say it out loud, Jace.”

Jace set the book down on the end table. “I’m not trying to be insensitive, Holden. But the more we talk about it, the more likely it is that your brain is going to kick in at some point and it’s all going to fall into place. Don’t forget, Tim is working to get River back, too.”

“I don’t trust the son of a bitch,” I growled. “If he were really on my side, he would have already told me where she was.”

“There’s no way I can disagree with you on that one.”

My phone vibrated against the glass of the coffee table in front of me. “It’s Chance.”

I accepted the FaceTime call. The second I saw Chance’s face, I immediately knew something was horribly wrong.

Jace joined me on the couch, then gave me a sideways glance.

“Hey, man. How is everyone doing?”

The overhead hospital lights shone on Chance’s cheeks and showcased his tears.

“Dude, talk. What’s going on?” I ordered.

He shook his head. “You guys need to fly down. She had an allergic reaction to the chemo. They had to induce a coma and she’s on a ventilator.” Chance stared at the floor. “It’s not good. You guys should get down here in case this is goodbye.”

I shot off the couch, my heart splintering. We couldn’t lose her. No way. It wasn’t fucking allowed.

“Jace will book us a flight, and I’ll start packing. Is there anything we need to bring down for you?”

Chance shook his head. “No. Just get down here.”

“We’re on it. And if anything changes …”

“You’ll be the first call I make,” he assured me.

Chance disconnected the video, and I stared at Jace.

“I’m already on it.” He returned to the recliner and grabbed his Mac.

An unexplainable calm enveloped me as I pushed all the fear and negativity down into the darkest part of myself. I had to keep a level head.

Jace looked up from his computer. “We can be on the next flight if we can make it in two hours.”

“Yes. That gives us an hour to get clothes and shit together. I packed to stay here for a few days, so I’m already set.”

The sound of Jace typing was the only sound in the room. “Booked.” He closed the laptop and hopped out of the chair. “I’ll be ready in ten.”

“What can I do to help?” I asked as my pulse throbbed in my head.

“Whatever bodyguard is outside, let them know.”

“Oh shit. I bet Zayne is back.” I hurried to the front door and searched the premises.
