“Hey, man.” I waved at Zayne in the front yard. “I’ll explain on the way, but we gotta head to the airport in ten minutes.” I closed the door before he could reply.

I ran up the stairs to Jace’s room. “Zayne’s back. I’ve seen him drive in an emergency. He’ll get us there on time.”

“Excellent.” Jace ran his hands over his hair and searched the room with a blank expression.

“A few pairs of clothes, toothbrush, shower and shaving shit, and your MacBook. Oh, and chargers for phones and headphones,” I rattled off the list.

Jace pointed at me. “Thanks.” He darted to the bathroom, scooped the necessary items into his arms, then tucked them into his suitcase.

“Is that your phone charger?” I removed it from the wall anyway and tossed it on top of his clothes.

“Yeah. My Mac cord is over there.” He tilted his head in the opposite direction.

I snatched it up and helped him finish packing. Since I hadn’t even unpacked my reusable grocery bag, I was already set.

“Ready?” Jace heaved the strap over his shoulder. “I have extra clothes in case you need to borrow a shirt or something.”

“Good idea. We can always shop if we have too … but I doubt we will want to leave Brynn’s side unless they force us.”

“Keys, wallet, phone … I’m good. You?” Jace patted his front pocket, then scooted by me and into the hall.

Mentally, I double-checked that I had my shit as well.

The sound of our socked feet smacking the wood stairs echoed through the house. I grabbed my belongings that were still in the entry way and flung the front door open. Jace locked up, and we hurried to the car. Zayne was already in the driver’s seat. As soon as we were settled in and buckled up, he shifted into drive.

“Brynn had an allergic reaction to her chemo. She’s on the vent. Chance said to hurry … we might have to say goodbye.” My words clogged my throat, and I struggled to breathe.

Without a word, Zayne tapped the phone button on the steering wheel as he pulled out of Jace’s driveway.

“Zayne. What’s going on?” Pierce’s voice came through the Bluetooth system.

“Is your plane available? We have a medical emergency in Portland.” Zayne’s gaze cut over to me.

“I can have it ready by the time you reach the airport. Is Holden all right?”

“It’s Brynn,” I chimed in. “She’s at OHSU for … she has cancer.” I wasn’t sure if Zayne had filled him in or not. “She had a reaction to her chemo and she … we don’t know if she’s going to live.” My words trailed off.

“Shit,” Pierce said. “Yeah, it will be ready to go. Plus, my plane will get you down there a lot faster.”

I glanced over my shoulder at Jace in the back seat.

“Thanks, Pierce,” I said.

“Zayne, you know where to go. Keep me posted. Hang in there, guys. If you need anything, and I mean anything, I’m only a phone call away.” Pierce’s words were genuine and heartfelt.

“Find River,” I whispered beneath my breath. There wasn’t any reason for me to say it out loud. I knew Pierce and Sutton were working their asses off.

Zayne disconnected the call, and I slumped into my seat.

“You’re a fucking life saver, Zayne. Thanks, man. I’ll let Chance know when we’ll be there.”

“Good thing I booked refundable tickets.” Jace removed his phone from his pocket and canceled our flights.

Once we were on the way to the airport, Jace leaned forward. “How was last night, Zayne?”

“Oh shit, that’s right.” I glanced at my bodyguard, who I was quickly considering a friend.

“Exactly what I needed.” A corner of his mouth turned up. “Stress release in the best form.”
